I have to admit I did think about the Renfrew Ferry when I looked at the plan. If they have any sense and move it to the other side or somewhere where it can be more accessible, which it certainly deserves cause it's a nice wee venue.

Here a nasty little pic showing the construction of the Kingston Bridge and the M8 clearances

U can see a dock running east of the Kingston Bridge on the ...erm, Kingston side of the river; do they plan to simpley re-excavate a section of the basin for the shiny new ship thingy?

Good photo... interesting to see that the footbridge to nowhere is half-built there already!

That would be Windmillcroft Quay. It looks as though its in the process of being filled in, no doubt theres many of the great buildings that were demolished around this time now supporting that Barrat extravaganza that now dwells on this site.

Nice vertical pic into the bargain. What I would give to have had a shoofty around the General Terminus site just to the West of quay. It was used to supply coal, coke and iron ore to the steel works at Clydebridge (Colvilles) and Ravenscraig. The opening of the deep water coal terminal at Hunterston was the death knell.

I've found this other photo in the "Glasgow Since 1900" book.

The dock was called Kingston Dock, surprisingly.

Great pic - got any more like it? The devastation to Anderston
and Charing Cross is so apparent in that shot :(

*EDIT* - just noticed in the top right of that picture is Spiers Wharf - the
section that's currently 'missing' has already been filled in.

Tis a great pic innit  That and the following two are taken from
Rebuilding Scotland:
The Postwar Vision 1945-1974
Edited by Miles Glenginning

This pic is of the Glasgow Highway Plan (1965) showing the plans of the Inner Ring Road with the CDA's (Comprehensive Development Areas) superimposed

Image

This next one is an oblique view of the arial shot in 1974 shortly after completion of the road. Notice the Kingston Dock (cheers James) has been filled in, Iv also since read (always helps when u read the text and not jus look at the pritty pictures   ) that it was filled in, along with a couple of others, with the Gorbals... turns my stomach to think!

...BTW... whats this ur saying about Spiers Wharf James?

Was at the Fall there just the other week. To be honest it was the first time I've been there and it was perhaps a bit too packed for comfort, but you couldnt help feel it was a unique little venue.

I know this area of Tradeston very well since living at Nelson St/West St until the mid 50's. This was a good area in its day and I am shattered by the amount of demolition that has occured. However, I do notice they managed to save the Co-Op complex. It is also interesting that Glasgow City Council (the George Square mob) allowed the area to decline for 4 decades without taking any steps to improve the situation. Cutting the wide swath of demolition through the centre of Glasgow for the highway was a big, big mistake. By all accounts/experts it should have been a ring road? Thank you all for the excellent photographs of the area and the book references help.

Had a rake through the Glasgow's Glasgow Souvenir Guide and found a similar colour picture of Glasgow during the M8 construction.

Image

Sorry it's no the best quality, but it was a tiny wee picture in the book, I've just scanned it at higher res.

Has anyone got some better hosting space for the pictures? They're just shoved on some crappy sig. hosting site at the mo' don't know how long they'll stay on it.

Cheers, Allan

The thought of that ringroad being completed still leaves me cold. What
the hell where they thinking?

[useless trivia]
They filled in the Queen's Dock (where the SECC is now) with the rubble
from St Enoch station and it's approach viaducts. :(

The canal up at Spiers Wharf/Basin's - currently, they are isolated from
one another, with a 'missing' section. This was done at the time of the
M8 construction, as you can just make out in that image. The water is
piped from the Basins to Spiers Wharf.

I read they plan to restore it and create some form of marina at the
basins.

I think people who were involved would even admit that it was a big
mistake. The initial plan for the ringroad is shown in one of the images
above. The eastern flank was basically to go straight down the High St.
A number of buildings were demolished in the early 80's in preperation
for this. The Townhead interchange was also built specifically for this
purpose.

Excellent picture. St Enoch is still there, but it looks like Buchanan St
Station has already been demolished. Parlimentary Road is obvious,
and Townhead is still full of tenements. Looks also like Glasgow College
(now the Caledonian Uni) has been built - didnt hang about did they?
