When the scaffolding that went up in October came down again it looked as though they'd fixed the broken glass in the lantern, presumably making the building (more) weathertight.

Yesterday I went past for the first time since the latest Great Storm - a chunk of the lantern is now completely missing. And there's a slab of suspiciously shaped glass lying on the eastern (ie farther) pavement of the bridge, along with some smaller pieces. Moral: in hurricanes stay upwind of buildings with lanterns.

Hope they've got storm damage building insurance (whoever 'they' are).

I do hope the south rotunda does get saved and developed in a sensitive way. God knows but sooo much of our history just seem to have been swept away and once its gone, its gone, especially in the dockland areas. I wrote recently in a forum about the tunnel running between the rotundus' and their history and how vital it was to try and preserve something before its too late. We owe this to future generations. It all tends to come down big business with their commercial interests, local authorities that dont really care, and the good folks who do care for our heritage, it makes you despair :(

Good to see the South Rotunda being used again

From the BBC website.

Historic Glasgow South Rotunda to host arts events

The event will showcase an innovative puppet show called Tin Forest

An unused historic structure which was part of Glasgow's original Clyde tunnel is to see new life as an arts venue.
The South Rotunda, linked to its north bank twin at Finnieston, formed the Harbour Tunnel, which opened in 1895.
After the tunnel closed in 1980, the North Rotunda saw use as a casino and a restaurant. Its south twin has remained unused apart from a brief spell during the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival.

Next year, it will host a "pop-up" arts festival along with the NTS.

The Scottish Youth Theatre will perform next year in the South Rotunda

The Tin Forest puppet show, which will take place in July 2014, is being staged by performers from the Scottish Youth Theatre under a wider programme run by the National Theatre for Scotland.

It has been billed as the finalé of an eight-month project across Glasgow and the Commonwealth, and part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme.

All performances at the South Rotunda will run during the Commonwealth Games
.
The festival will explore the city's industrial heritage and 21st century future and feature "a rich programme of performance and visual art".
