Youth Olympic Games

"GLASGOW has failed in its bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympics.

The city was knocked out in the first round of the voting in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Instead the International Olympic Committee decided to name Argentinian capital Buenos Aires the host city.

The decision comes as a bitter blow to Glasgow and Scotland which was in line to spend around £235million on the massive sporting event.

A delegation including Britain's most successful Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy, British Olympic Association chairman Sebastian Coe, organisers, politicians and school pupils had travelled to IOC headquarters in Lausanne for the announcement."

I wonder if those politicians who were so quick to try to claim the credit for the Commonwealth Games 2014, despite having had hee-haw to do with it, will put their hands up for fucking this up.

Ok, you've piqued my interest. Who fucked this up? I say this as somebody who has become somewhat jaded with the whole 'massive school sports day' thing, you understand.

Wonder how much was spent on this bid. Enough maybe to keep the special needs centres from closure? Will the Sighthill project now not go ahead? Will the stone circle remain? KO in first round. Maybe that should tell us something.

no fuck up, it was a good solid bid (all docs and presentation to IOC available on tinternet), comparable with the other two, the voting just didn't go glasgows way, this time.

around £2million spent. brought forward the Sighthill TRA timescale by 20 years. and yes, the redevelopment will still go ahead.

bargain.

oh, and budgets for programs such as this are not linked to "special needs" centres budgets.

I don't doubt it'll still go ahead but will it be completed by 2018? There's nothing like a deadline to concentrate the mind.

Dare I ask, what in the name of regeneration is a TRA?

PS I always preferred Steve Ovett.

Here, £2 million won't spend itself, y'know.

Just trying to be realistic.

There's someone sitting in Matheson's Mansion with a spreadsheet regarding the regeneration of Sighthill and the sums around the Youth Olympics are part of that.

Without the anticipated income (and associated costs) those sums will need to be revisited.

To be clear, seeing as noone seems too bothered about reading into the facts for theselves and would rather take some glib off hand remark as a summation of the reality of how bids budgets, social car e budgets and regeneration programmes are not interdependent, i thought id try interjection at least a nuance of reason into this discussion. but hey, why let the truth get in the way of a good 'ol moan :)

and not to be one who goes against the grain, it would probably have pished doon the whole of 2018 anyway...
