Geothermal Heating

Postby Sharon » Wed Feb 13, 2013 8:06 am

Interesting.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-g ... t-21431763

Researchers are launching a project which aims to use water from abandoned coal mines to provide up to 40% of Glasgow's heat.

It is hoped reservoirs in the city's old tunnels can be used to create geothermal energy.

The process uses pumps to extract heat from the stored water, which can provide a cheap way to heat homes.

A Glasgow Caledonian University team will identify underground reservoirs with the potential to heat homes.

Heard that on Radio 4 this morning. They also stated a pilot project is on going with a street in the East End already getting supplied with heat using this method.

Some more detective work for HGers to identify the street and the mines used? Personally I don't have a clue

The street was named in the BBC article, the mines do need a detective though! :)

Glenalmond Street, in the east end of Glasgow, has been using geothermal energy for 10 years, heating 17 homes.

Most of the west end especially Jordanhill/Knightswood and the Blairdardie area and parts of Drumchapel are undermined.

Undermined and having deep mines under them to provide geothermal heating is two different things. A bit like your alternative take on the history of west central scotland during the Second World War.

You just brought my schooldays back, Mo. Not an easy thing to do.

We had five 'houses'. Dechmont, Douglas, Calder, Clyde and Kelvin.

And yes, it was a state school rather then Hogwarts.

Better that than Milk of Magnesia. I still cringe at the very notion of the taste, let alone the taste itself.

Real poverty, eh? Two kids having to share one ASBO tag.

They did a similar project on a small scale about 15 years ago on Glenalmond St in Shettleston - the site of the old Grays The Builders depot they flattened it and then sunk boreholes down to extract geothermal heat from the coal mines down there.
