There's already a restaurant chain called Giraffe taking up one of the ground floor units at the back. Think they're owned by Tesco, curiously enough.

Anything special about the girders (with the holes) they are using. I suppose its a weight/strength thing and are they using any special alloy?

A combination of that, plus it allows them to route services through the voids -aircon, wiring, water pipes and the like - they are able to use higher strength alloys as you say probably, although some bright spark has probably done the calculation of how much area/volume you can safely take out of the webs of the beams versus increasing the I-value (moment of area) by upping the actual depth of the beam.

They are called cellular beams, and are manufactured by a division of the company I work for.

A look at how they work in the Odeon.
I hear the people sing.

Great photo. of the 60's or 70's. Unfortunately those times are gone probably forever. Notice how well dressed all the people on the street are unlike today? I always thought that building was well kept but look at the upper floor level.

Haven't been in town for ages, looking at the Google Maps image which dates to July 2014, the old facade is still looking a bit sorry for itself.....have they actually started restoring it yet?

Nope, still as it was. At the same time as they got permission to demolish the auditorium for the office tower currently nearing completion, they also got permission to convert the foyer block into a hostel/hotel/bar. There was no interest in that, as it was shortly after the economy dived, and the remaining foyer block is not actually all that big internally - it's also a shell so would require extensive work.

That permission is currently in for renewal, and the foyer block is being remarketed to see if there is new interest now the economy has picked up a little.
