Save the Egyptian Halls

Postby delirium » Sun Apr 24, 2011 4:39 pm

I've already posted this on a couple of threads and many of you are no doubt well aware of this - perhaps even connected with it. But I can't see a thread promoting it... if there is I'm quite sure someone will point it out and this can be deleted or left to sink.

Anyway, a campaign and petition has been launched to attempt to save the Egyptian Halls from demolition.

Rather than reword I'll cut and paste from the Facebook campaign page:

Time is running out to save one of the UK's most impressive A-listed buildings.

Permission is being sought to demolish Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's Egyptian Halls in Glasgow's Union Street. This internationally-acclaimed building will be reduced to rubble and the site cleared, and with it we'll lose an integral part of the city's identity.

Unless £2.35 million can be found to save it, the building may be condemned as soon as Summer 2011 and demolished. Once the developers have been granted permission to knock it down, Scotland will lose one of its architectural jewels.

It was described by Neil Baxter, secretary of the Royal Incorporation Of Architects in Scotland, as "the finest surviving example of an Alexander Thomson commercial building. This is a building of the first international importance and it would be a great pity if lack of a relatively small amount of money in terms of public expenditure, condemned this building."

Despite decades of neglect the building is sound and can still be saved for future purpose - if we act soon enough.

Facade retention isn't an option due to costs, location, difficulties with neighbouring cellars etc. It's all or nothing. Save it or get a glass box... or a gap site until the glass box appears.

Objections have to be in to [email protected] by 20th May or it's going.

funny how they always say it will create --- jobs which never materialise what jobs do they mean?
the demolition jobs? the security jobs while its a gap site? the building jobs putting up a nonedescript building to replace what was an excellent building before or the jobs which will be created by whoever takes over the new building?

PROPOSALS to transform of Glasgow's most famous buildings have finally been revealed

Ambitious plans have been unveiled to transform one of Glasgow's most celebrated buildings into a 114-bedroom hotel in Union Street.

The proposals will convert the upper three floors of the Grade A listed Egyptian Halls, built by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, into a 3-star hotel.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Hi Mercury, great shots, I have never seen inside that building, thanks for sharing your photos
That spiral staircase looks a bit dodgy
I see on the sign, there was a cinema , did you get any shots of it, I never knew they had one

Sorry Norrie, my photographer said he didn't see anything of the cinema. The photos were taken on all floors which the cinema would have been on the 3rd. :)

Hi mercury, pity, still the cinema may well have just been a room that was used to show films, perhaps for the School that was there ?
