ZM Architecture scoops Queen's Park Arena
The contest to design a new multi-purpose performance space in Glasgow’s Queen’s Park has been won by ZM Architecture
The practice saw off Nicholas Roberts of Manifest Architecture; London-based Nicholas Ecob; Martin Jarvie and Judy Cheung and BFLS (formerly Hamiltons) to land the competition which was run by The Glasgow Institute of Architects.
Based on the ‘listening devices for enemy aircraft’, the £350,000 proposal for the former 1930s bandstand and ampitheatre features six counterbalanced, bronze panels which can swing up to form a roof.
A spokesman for the practice said: ‘Our submission is designed to deter graffiti, flyposting, climbing, and fire [while creating] a robust, functional and elegant poetic marker in the landscape.’
The scheme is being delivered by the community groups and the local council

SITE AND DESCRIPTION
This planning application seeks consent for the redevelopment of the amphitheatre, alterations to existing
terraced steps, ancillary outbuilding and formation of a SUDS pond within Queens Park.
The application site is just outwith Crosshill Conservation Area, is a Site of Special Landscape Importance and
is covered by Development Policy Principle DEV 11 - Green Space. The proposed area is located to the north
of Queens Park. The site can be accessed from Victoria Gate and Balvicar Street Gate. There had previously
been a bandstand on this site facing northeast with associated shallow amphitheatre terraces. These terraces
still exist although the bandstand burnt down in the 1990’s and now the amphitheatre area is in poor condition.
The applicant Queens Park Arena Ltd (QPA) (a steering group representing 4 Community Council’s:
Crosshill/Govanhill, Langside, Battlefield and Camphill, Mt Florida, Shawlands and Strathbungo) proposes to
redevelop this site by erecting a new amphitheatre, alter the existing steps and ancillary out building and form a
SUDS pond (to rear of stage). The agent has advised that the QPA “with support from Glasgow City Council,
have worked since April 2009 to develop the project to renovate the former bandstand area in Queens Park,
Langside Glasgow”. If this proposal is approved the intention is that this site would be given over to the
applicant under lease and it would be the applicant that would be responsible for its maintenance.
The proposed arena will be principally for community use and will try to accommodate various types of music,
drama, dance and film as well as casual and informal daytime uses such as children’s events, exercise classes
and occasional large scale activities i.e. ice skating in winter and visiting music and drama events staged by
professional companies.
The applicant proposes to remove the existing trees on site, however after further discussions in relation to their
retention the applicant has agreed to conditions being placed on this consent i.e. no trees to be removed on site
and further details of the trees proposed to be removed to be submitted for the prior written approval of the
Planning Authority. The terraced seating area is to be re-landscaped to provide fewer but deeper terraces. The
existing brick structure on site is currently used for storage but was formerly a WC. This is proposed to be
altered (i.e. replace pitched roof with mono pitched roof) adapted and converted into a facilities building which
would include a WC and changing area. The proposed performance structure (amphitheatre) is designed in 2
sections with a steel frame and finished in perforated metal copper sheet. The fixed structure is based on a
container design with storage space, and the upper tilting section is hinged and capable of being locked in 4
positions. Lighting for performances and ramp has been mentioned within the Design Report, however no detail
on this submitted. As such it is recommended that this be addressed via condition.

ZM to present update on project at GIA AGM
ZM will be presenting a short update on the Queens Park Arena project at the Glasgow Institute of Architects AGM on 21st April at GSA

We’ll bring back our bandstand

Image

The first phase of the work, which it is hoped will begin this summer, will cost around £250,000 and will involve making the area safe by filling in old mine workings.

The existing amphitheatre terrace will be restored and the area round the bandstand, which can get muddy, will be drained.

It is hoped that work will allow the area to be used by the community for events from next year.

The second phase of work will involve cash being raised to allow the new bandstand to be built.

Queen’s Park amphitheatre set to rise from the ashes

Image

23 Sep 2011

Work has begun to restore a derelict South Side amphitheatre to its former glory.

Four local community councils have been working for the past two years to raise the £600,000 needed to rebuild the 100-year-old Queen’s Park bandstand.
And now the two years of planning are set to become reality as engineers move into the park to in-fill old mine tunnels on the site.
Evelyn Silber, chairwoman of the Queen’s Park Arena steering group, said the committee was delighted to see work finally begin.
She said: “We are really pleased.
“Every time we hold a consultation we learn from people across the city how excited they are that we are doing this.”
The steering group is made up of representatives from Crosshill/Govanhill, Langside, Battlefield, Camphill, Mount Florida, Shawlands and Strathbungo community councils.
Although more than half a million pounds is needed to complete the project, the steering group, which is now a registered charity, is carrying out the upgrade in two phases.
The first phase of work, costing £180,000, involves stabilising the ground, installing new drainage and power and resurfacing the arena and terraces to create seats for 200 people.
The group held a competition to design the new bandstand, which was won by Glasgow-based architects ZM.
The second phase will see ZM’s plans come to life with the addition of changing rooms, a canopy, more seating, a stage and a screen.
Evelyn, a former museum director, added: “We have had fantastic support for this project.
“When the first phase is finished it will be interesting to see who comes to the bandstand and how they use it.
“Hopefully it will be a popular draw for people from all over Glasgow and beyond.”
The original Queen’s Park bandstand was moved to Duchess Park in Motherwell in 1920, leaving the area vacant for 10 years.
A new bandstand was built in 1930 but, after years of neglect, it burnt down in 1996, leaving the site derelict.
In its day, the bandstand attracted a range of musical and theatre acts.
African American singer, actor and civil rights activist Paul Robeson performed at the bandstand on May Day 1960.

Performers taking part in a special open-air concert this weekend will celebrate the launch of the new Queen's Park Arena and get their first chance to see the work done on the site.

Four community councils have worked tirelessly to give new life to the bandstand, which burned down in 1996 after years of neglect.

Dr Evelyn Silber, chairwoman of Queen's Park Arena Ltd, said: "We are very excited about holding our first performance at the Arena and very grateful to Glasgow City Council and all the other organisations that have supported us.

"So many people have been enthusiastic about the prospect of what this restored and transformed space can do, we hope they will now come and enjoy the venue they have helped us recreate."

The formal opening will take place on Saturday, with a day-long series of events involving local performers.
