(It turns out that Transport Scotland and SPT both made formal objections to the plans when they were up for outline approval in 2007, by the way.)

They have a point.

Why not allow the extension to Buchanan Galleries, close St Enoch Centre, relocate retailers to the many empty premises in Argyle St/Trongate, flatten aforementioned centre and build Railway Station & Hotel on the vacant site.

Looks like the big scheme is back on the cards again: (read this in conjunction with the Queen Street remodelling scheme)

So the original idea about building over Buchanan Bus Station has mercifully been abandoned. That would have looked like a total bag of s**t. So now they are going to build a new car park for both Queen Street station and the Galleries on the existing car park on the station grounds. Then they'll flatten the existing Galleries car park to build the extension. It's going to be one helluva job....probably as big as the Galleries was in the first place.

I am now of an age where I don't particularly enjoy shopping (more out of necessity than pleasure) but have to say I detest Buchanan Galleries.

Actually, Braehead, Buchanan Galleries, Silverburn, St Enoch are all dull, depressing, soulless. The Fort is the only Glasgow one to try and deviate from the norm but still with the same shops. Nasty places.

The Fort is starting to get grotty now - it's been there now for nearly 10 years (gulp!) I agree though, I used to be a big fan of malls but can take them or leave them now. Some were reasonably interesting architecturally in their day - St Enoch was fun when it was originally built, now all these bits they've added on have just made it grotesque. Princes Square is still pretty much as it was - a good fusion of Art Nouveaux and late '80s bling - it's probably my favourite.

Personally I tire of the same old chain stores with the same old merchandise. I do a lot of shopping online these days and I'm not afraid to indulge in s/h items from eBay cos you can get stuff that's refreshingly different.

i stay well clear of those groundhog day places,but then again i only shop for food ingredients.
