New Exhibition Explores Hidden History of Mental Health

The Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow, 6th – 20th October

In partnership with the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival 2007 (http://www.MHFestival.com), Mental Health Media is pleased to present Testimony – Inside Stories of Mental Health Care, a special exhibition highlighting the experiences of mental health service users and those with mental health problems in the 20th century.

Testimony started in 1999 as an archive of video interviews with people who spent time in some of the UK’s old asylum-based hospitals. This year, Mental Health Media commissioned artists and film-makers to create new works tackling some of the issues arising from this rich collection of life-stories. The results will be on display at the Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow, from Saturday 6th – Saturday 20th October.

Visitors to the exhibition can see:

* Interactive displays about the history of mental health care.
* Original artwork – a range of diverse pieces exploring mental health and human experience. Including manipulated photographic negatives taken of patients on their admission to psychiatric hospitals in the 1890s, and series of pictures taken of an abandoned asylum.
* Continuous screenings of extracts from the archive collection and five new short documentaries.

Our aim is to increase understanding about and challenge attitudes towards those who use mental health services. Please pass this information on to anyone you feel would be interested – we look forward to seeing you there.

Saturday 6th – Saturday 20th October

Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow G3 7DN

did anyone go and see this exhibition yet? I think they used some of my photos (and possibly some other folks here?), but I've not had a chance to see it.
