It was nice to see Glasgow winning the competition to hold the Worldcon again. I attended Intersection in 1995 and didn't expect to see it back again.

It'll be interesting to see the reviews afterwards, as I'm afraid I think the membership fee is rather high for what you get now, non-pre-registered £120 at the door, or £25 to £40 per day.

Albacon and Eastercon at the Central Hotel used to be good events, but it seemed that the onset of video and DVD etc. knocked the wind out of these events, and the content withered away in the latter years, as seeing films and original TV programmes and series that were otherwise inaccessible seemed to provide a focal point.

Used to be great watching the faces/behaviour of ordinary train travellers from the hotel windows over the concourse, especially on the day of the masquerade as the members went for a walk in full costume.

To a certain extent I think you have answered your own question.

If you're looking for a cheaper convention try the TUC annual congress but you do get what you pay for.

For comparison, full attending prices from past Cons:

Albacon 87 £8 (yes, really, the whole weekend)

Speculation (1991, Holiday Inn) £25

Intersection, last Worldcon in Glasgow, 1993 £60

Albacon 94 £25

Albacon 98 £30

A high profile guest list may be nice, and look good on the Con's protfolio, but most of the names are far from poor, and demand horrendous fees and expenses just for the effort of getting out of their beds, and I'm not paying for that.

Hats off the few that don't look for silly money.

Mind you, it might have been worth it to have paid to see Terry Pratchett tear into J K (I didn't know I was writing fantasy) Rowling :twisted:

Much as I'd love to see these authors in the flesh I'd rather spend the money buying their books. Better that than having a fleeting encounter in a crowded convention with them spouting juicy bon mots from their latest yet to be published effort that I won't get my grubby mitts on for another six months. Still don't get why it's so expensive. If they want to push product at me I don't see why I should have to pay through the nose for the privilege.

Had to laugh at Terry Pratchett's letter on the Potter phenomenon. Didn't think she was writing fantasy indeed! Does that mean JK thinks the Harry Potter universe is infact real?
