Day, Date & Time:
Tuesday 22 October 2013 (1730 for 1800)

Venue:First ScotRail, Atrium Court, 50, Waterloo Street, Glasgow, G2 6HQ

Topic & Speaker:"Modernising the Subway" by Bruce Kiloh, SPT Business Improvement Manager

When it opened in 1896, the Glasgow Subway was only the third underground railway in the world after those in London and Budapest. Refurbished in the 1970s, it became affectionately known as the Clockwork Orange, and is now being modernised by SPT with spectacular improvements to stations so as to make it fit for purpose in the twenty-first century.

I'm going to go along to find out precisely when it became affectionally known as The Clockwork Orange.

Any ideas?

It would`ve been in 1980 when it was reopened after modernisation, cos all the old rolling stock where variations of red. Plus, I`m pretty sure, though it could`ve come shortly after, all the buses and most local trains were all done orange to tie-in with the overall brand Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive, (SPTE was painted in black logo on the sides of all these vehicles).

Much younger members might mis-attribute this moniker to Kubrick`s film of the same name.

"comfort and quiet running"??? 8O

Is this a different Glasgow Subway situated in some parallel universe to the one I've used over the years?

Do tell when you find out please Dexter, I've never heard it called Clockwork Orange, I've seen it called that in print loads of times though, but never heard it verbalised.

Me neither, and that's after years of using it to go to Ibrox for the football. It was always either the Subway or the Underground. Not once have I heard anyone call it the Clockwork Orange.

Something is rekindled in my mind...

I seem to remember that there was a newspaper that nicknamed it the 'Clockwork Orange' prior to the thing opening. I have this very distant memory of something along the lines of 'Glasgow's people will dubb the subway, the new Clockwork Orange' but like the majority, I've always called it the Subway or Underground. Subway being my preferred choice.

Can't be certain as I'd need to align the chimneys on the nearby tenements with an AtoZ but it could be either Maryhill Rd or Cathcart Rd......dammit YB your getting confuddled by HGs many forums.
