Necropolis tours 21/ 22 August

Postby Ronnie » Tue Aug 10, 2004 2:32 pm

My next guided tours of the Glasgow Necropolis will be on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August, both leaving at 2pm from the front steps of the St Mungo Museum, Castle Street, Glasgow. The tours last around two hours and will be followed by a hot chocolate or cold beer in a nearby hostelry.

Also, as part of the BLOCK: Architectural Festival (http://www.thelighthouse.co.uk), I will be leading two guided tours of the Necropolis on Monday 20 (6pm) and Thursday 23 September (6pm), and a guided tour "From Cathedral to Clyde" on Saturday 25 September (2pm). These walks are free, but must be booked through The Lighthouse. As usual, pub afterwards.

In addition, I will be speaking at a conference - "A Fine and Private Place: Exploring Local Graveyards" - at the Smith Art Gallery in Stirling on Saturday 4 September (10.30am t0 4.30pm). I will be talking about how grave robbing influenced the design and operation of Victorian cemeteries. This is a free event, but places must be booked through the Council for Scottish Archaeology (0131-247 4119 or [email protected]). More information on http://www.scottishgraveyards.org.uk.

Hope to see you at one or more of these events.
Best, Ronnie

Well, I'll certainly be along on the 21st for sure.

And I'd recommend the Necropolis tour to anyone who hasn't been on one yet. Well worth the trip.

Any plans to have a look anywhere else beforehand Ronnie?

I'm going to have a look inside the Cathedral anyway, but if there's a wee expedition to somewhere else in the morning I'd be up for that too.
Too few hours in the day.

Thanks, Doc. I'd be very interested in a wee look somewhere beforehand, maybe the Southern Necropolis, maybe the enormous car park on the east side of the High Street (former university, then goods yard/ station), maybe the area around Martyr's School, maybe the Strathclyde University campus ...

Wherever you think's worth a gander, as long as I can get an hour to spare between that and 2pm to take in the Cathedral, I'll be happy.

I'll be there on the 21st, almost definitely. I'll confirm nearer the day.

Hi Skinto
The one on 22 August is not connected with the Lighthouse, so just turn up on the day. Look forward to meeting you.

Does that mean the one on the 21st is an "official" one and we should book?

Thanks Ronnie,

I am looking forward to it, see ya there.

Will you be the one with the carnation in your lapel and a copy of the Sunday Times under your arm?

Do you have any restrictions on numbers, Ronnie? I'm interested too, as the Necropolis has been one of my favourite places since my sister's room at GRI nurses home looked out on it. I'm not sure enough of being well enough to do it to book a place that might be better used by someone else though. Is it alright just to turn up on the 22nd if well enough?

Hi folks
The August tours are mine, so feel free to just turn up.
Don't worry about recognising me - I'll recognise you, since there will be a bunch of people hanging about on the steps.
Looking forward to seeing you all next weekend.

The burd and I quite fancy going on the 21st August, but the Lighthouse site keeps crashing my computer for some unknown reason. Is it ok if we just turn up at the steps?

Cheers,

Tim.

Hi Tim
The August walks are mine, so no need to annoy the Lighthouse.
Just turn up (stout shoes, waterproofs, camera) and we'll see you there.
Best, Ronnie
