Computer Problems.

Postby Doorstop » Sat Aug 16, 2008 11:39 pm

After having a virus infection alert (Antivirus2008) the other night, and running AVG and Ad-Aware to get rid of the blighter I find I'm left with a machine which has serious problems (registry issues, loads of background processes, pop-ups galore) as obviously both the virus checker and Malware remover are missing something.

The whole thing is beyond my technical expertise so it's off to the computer hospital for the computer, I fear.

Do any of my fellow HG'ers know of a reliable computer repair shop that can get the thing back running properly without having to reinstall Windows, software applications etc as there is loads of stuff on my hard drive I will find difficult (if not impossible) to replace?

Also, what sort of fee do the Tech boys usually charge for this kind of repair?

Cheers, in advance, for any advice graciously given.

Can't help with a shop, but I think running a program called Hijack This, then stopping any unknown services from running at startup is one way to deal with the problem. Depends on how techy you are.

Maybe someone else will have some better info.
Eighty percent of success is showing up.

My PC broke down and i was told to try this place here is their web page http://www.pless.co.uk/home.php

they have a shop on Argyle st across from pc world near Fineston police station but i am sure they have a few shops.

they charge around £15 deposit which is taken off your bill.
Ask them to make you a back up CD of your files, they will do that also. give them a phone and they will tell you all the details you need to know and when to book in your pc.

ps they give you a price once they have checked your PC over before they carry the work out.

(I phoned PC world to book in my computer for the above repair was quoted £100 and a 7 week wait)

pricless computers full charge £28 repaird in 4 days
I was happy with the price and service i got and would use again. :D

Thanks for the quick response gentlemen ..

Jazza, I've tried Hijack This and deselecting dodgy items in the MSCONFIG statup menu .. all to no avail as they only reinsert themselves after a reboot.

So it looks like I'll be going with BCUK's option, that's where I first thought of but I wasn't sure if they did software repairs as well as hardware builds/repairs etc.

Let you know how I get on.

Cheers again. 8)

You may also want to get rid of any 'free' adware/spyware removal programs. 'Free' tends to mean "we will install stuff to do stuff you know nothing about on your computer". I used to use AVG Free, I also had all the usual pish adaware, S&D etc. First thing I was told was - JUST USE ONE THING!!. Apparently they all conflict and try to remove each others ads which they all apparently are there to stop yet have their own bad stuff running. So first port of call is remove all the stuff that doesn't run constantly

Next bit of advice will have already proven it's worth by the time you pick up the bill from the PC hospital. Buy a good quality security suite. £25 is all you'll pay for an all singing all dancing suite and you will rarely - if ever - run into difficulties, you won't wait for updates like AVG it'll all get done on a fast server.

Do a system scan and save logfile with HiJack this, post the logfile here or PM me it and I'll take a look if you want.

I hate to see anyone paying money to fix a PC problem.

It sounds like your system is fairly screwed already... And while this perhaps isn't what you'd want to do, this is what I might do...

Buy an external hard drive (these things are huge and almost dirt cheap these days), shunt all the data you might want to keep. Unplug.

Nuke the system, install Windows afresh. Install a decent anti-virus, ad-blocker, whatever... Do this BEFORE replugging your external hard drive back in.

Once done, plug in your drive, and get the scanner to run over the contents. In theory, you now have a clean system with everything you wanted to keep...

It's probably about as safe a way as you have to clear out your system without losing what you want to keep.

I've also ran Malaware and Combofix and saved the logs .. if they are of any use?

SDS, that is my last resort as a fix as there is loads of software I have long since lost the installation disks for (obtained from friends, magazines etc) that I will simply never find again.

I already have an external drive (500G Maxtor) that I can shunt things like family photos, documents etc but I'd really rather not have to go hunting for all sorts of replacement apps as I don't think shunting apps from one drive to another is a viable prospect (apps install things like library files etc elsewhere on the root drive and once they have been deleted by a reinstallation of Windows surely that will prevent the apps from working? I could be wrong here btw.)

Open HijackThis.
Click "System Scan Only" .. and when that's complete place a tick in the following boxes:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [98613] C:\WINDOWS/98613.exe

O16 - DPF: {62475759-9E84-458E-A1AB-5D2C442ADFDE} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52/200 ... taller.exe

O16 - DPF: {C4925E65-7A1E-11D2-8BB4-00A0C9CC72C3} (Virtools WebPlayer Class) - http://a532.g.akamai.net/f/532/6712/4h/ ... taller.exe

Then click "Fix Checked" to remove the selected entries.

Personally i'd download, install and then update, with the following:

Spybot Search and Destroy (Immunize after updating, THEN Scan)

Spyware Blaster Update, then apply all protections.

Spuer Anti Spyware FREE Edition Update then Deep Scan .. i think!

Also, if you can "obtain" a copy of XOFTSPY, from Tit Borrent or somewhere, and update it. It's a great scanner, that would also be beneficial.

Lets us know how you get on.

Cheers :)

Good advice up there ^^

I'm still having a look through the log but in the meantime. This is a list of the security apps I use on my own machine.

Anti Malware - Comodo BOClean

Antivirus - Avast Pro They also have a free version.

Firewall - BT Homehub

Spybot S&D

Lavasoft Ad-Aware

That's all and my machine runs absolutely fine. I visit dodgy sites and I download about 150GB-200GB a month without any problems.

Be back soon.

Paste or upload your HijackThis log to:

http://www.hijackthis.de/

Click Analyze, this will scan the log, then it'll advise on any questionable items it finds.

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: xmxcog.dll hytpyy.dll ntvuil.dll

I don't know what those are especially the highlighted one. Search for those files and back them up. Delete the originals and restart.

oh yeah, I can't really comment on priceless / pless theses days, but back in the olden days (10 years ago or so) most of their new PC parts were broken / dud on arrival and the queue to get a repair or some helps was round the block. Happy to believe things have changed now though... :D

I built a PC the other week and it worked first time, I'm happy to say.

Fancy that: Reenie building a tower rather than knocking one down. :)

Those DLLs look dodgy. Google returns a few results - mostly from this thread.
