I'm on my third Kodak Hero 5.1 duly researched printer which I'm going to keep for scanning. Thank you Curries for replacing it each time within warranty but no thanks for stocking a printer that can't cope with instructions like "Scan" and requires new ink after twenty sheets printed in draft. It tells you the ink is low and then refuses to print.

Any recommendations for an economic printer which I will use occasionally to print in colour but mostly will used for B&W docs.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Have you tried getting the cartridges refilled as opposed to buying new ones?

You'll find refilling comes in at a fraction of the cost of new ink .. there's loads of places in Glasgow do it.

A quick google will give you the SP.

The disc problem is truly a strange one .. it doesn't show up in disc management at all, in any of the laptop USB ports.

It shows up in device manager, but not as a disc, as an "unknown device" (yellow warning triangle) in the USB hierarchy tree, Right clicking on it and selecting "update drivers" gives the result "drivers for this device are up to date".

Uninstalling the device from the USB tree, and then rebooting only brings me back to square one, device unrecognised.

However, plugging it into my Frankensteined desktop has it being seen immediately! Two of the folders (music and videos) were displaying with a small padlock on them and attempting to open them gave the message "you need to change ownership of this folder by right clicking and going into properties>security and changing the computer that owns the folder/subfolders"

After doing that, the disc and all its folders work fine .. it's a head scratcher.

I have a workaround as I have a 32gig memory key so anything I *really* need from the drive, I pop onto the key and transfer over .. bloody longwinded way to go about it though.

I had an entire 7 series of 'Supernatural' set to give to my friend, Muriel .. that was a right pain in the pee hole to transfer over.

RDR wrote:Why is there such a variation in how long a battery lasts between charges between different laptops.

I have a toshiba laptop and the battery life varies all the time sometimes it says 1 hour 40 mins other times less its currently 96% time remaining 1 hour 32 but if i use it on the battery in the library when doing research and taking notes the battery lasts about 1 hour 50 then it just goes which means i have to ensure anything typed up in microsoft word is saved so that i dont lose what ive typed up
To be perfectly honest sometimes its quicker to write everything in longhand then type it up in the house as my library wont allow me to use my mains adaptor its to do with it not being pat tested or something yet dundee library allows you to use the mains adaptor they also have free wifi as well! :D
battery is now 92% 1h 26 left on the battery

You might have to be a tad more specific. That's like going to the GP and saying "I've got a problem with my body."

Drupal is an easy open source program that painlessly leads you through layout and text and images without much pain. However if he is interested in good and bad design he should google(or other web browser) for best and worst web sites. A few hours looking and navigating around these sites will soon set him on the right track. It is interesting how much web design changes over time.

Not a problem. looking for the word of experience before i commit to a new gadget.

I am going to buy a laptop to run with a huge exdternal memory to host all my music.

All the laptops I have looked at only have a mini headphone style output socket.

Anyone know of a laptop that features a decent hi fi connect?

Cheers.
