What is the easiest way to build your own website ?

Postby akbar del piombo » Fri Jun 08, 2007 1:29 pm

Hi, I am involved with some friends who have formed a pressure group in an attempt to highlight the case of a friend who was killed at work by a defective piece of machinery. We have decided that we require a website and i agreed to undertake the task of investigating building one. Myself and the other friends have no previous IT experience. Can anyone provide me with any information as to how i could go about building a website. Thank you in advance.

I'd suggest you need a blog - something that immediately lets you add content yorselves. You could either use something like https://www.blogger.com/start or http://wordpress.com/ (there are lots of other options)

Many web hosting packages also have one-click-installs for blog software...meaning you could run a site under a domain name which might look better!

Starting a blog is a good idea as most are "ready made"

If you want a little more creative freedom, look at using a Content Management System. (CMS for short)

You will need webspace, and the ability to upload, but once you have that, it's incredibly easy to edit to suit your needs.

Probably the easiest ones to install and use are Joomla and Mambo. Joomla is based on Mambo, so they are very similar, although some features differ slightly.

Both are ideal for beginners, and once you have them installed, there are lots of skins available for free. Skins are just a way of changing the look of your site. Colour schemes etc are changed automatically when you install a skin.

If you are unsure if you could manage this kind of site, have a look here http://help.mamboserver.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=39&Itemid=70

That is the installation documentation for Mambo. Have a read through it, and if you feel you could manage it, give it a go.
