Factory Records and The Hacienda

Postby John » Sun Oct 29, 2006 6:53 pm

To acknowledge my Manchester trip here is a bit of nostalgia for the Joy Division / New Order fans amongst us:

The hole in the ground that used to be The Hacienda:

Did I ever mention that I met Rob Gretton once? Or to be more accurate he had to step over me in the Rough Trade offices in London many years ago.

What a great record Temption was. I was really into Joy Division and New Order. Sadly I have lost most of my records apart from a few of the 7" singles. I used to have a massive collection of bootlegs from their gigs but those are lost too.

I recently lent my copy of 'From Brussels With Love' to a bloke who is reissuing it and couldn't get his hands on the original art work :) .

I confess to having been a bit of a Factory freak in the early days: I had virtually everything in the first fifty catalogue numbers barring the silly ones (Peter Saville's dental work, Linder's menstrual egg timer 8O , etc).

I have a nice little selection of Factory items on my flickr page here. They aren't my pics and are just images I have harvested from the web over the years.

Like the wee enamel badges. We'll have to get Foss to knock off a few bootleg copies :) .

I have a rather interesting recording from 1984 which is a mix of Temptation and Louie Louie featuring me on bass and keyboards, the manager of a well known 80's pop group on vocals and tambourine and the singer of a well known alt rock group on vocals and guitar.

I would love to say that it caputred a moment of pure rock history but that would be a lie - it is bloody awful but we were bored and there was nothing else to do but record a song. And all without the assistance of any drink or drugs.

Please don't ask to hear it as I have never, ever let anyone hear it.

I don't want to give too much away as I have a notion to write a book one day....

Night all. I am off to bed in my hotel room in rainy Manchester.
