Bread -Bakers

Postby RDR » Sun Nov 30, 2014 8:42 am

I'm fed up with Supermarket and the Mass produced stuff that pretends to be bread these days.
So, are there any independent bakers left in Glasgow, that might produce something better?
I know of two in Lanarkshire, one in Biggar and one in Strathaven but are there any in Glasgow?

There's a good choice of bread in Roots and Fruits (?) on Argyle St opposite Grove St.
I hear the people sing.

I think Roots & Fruits get their bread from Kember & Jones; You can buy it in their restaurant on Byres Road. Pekhams also sell nice breads. In fact, there's about four or five shops on that block between University Avenue and University Place selling decent "Artisan" breads.

Supermarket bread is poor; artisan bread is expensive - make your own. Go on, it's easy, well easier than you might think. I saw Richard Bertinet on Saturday Kitchen nearly four years ago and haven't bought a loaf since.
Tesco sells good quality bread flour and dried yeast is fine. Along with water and good salt, that's all you need to get started - you don't need specialist equipment, though you might want to get some things as your skills develop.
I've added the clip that got me started, along with links to Lorraine Pascal and Paul Hollywood who are both good.

+1 Eddy, there's calmness and joy as well as good bread on offer.

True, so true. And great smells throughout the house. People notice the difference too in taste, texture, appearance.

Eddy,
thanks. Yes I've made my own bread in the past. Seldom lasts a day as once out the oven the family devours it.
Just finding the time to do it......
