Hippo Skull

Postby DickyHart » Tue Oct 22, 2013 12:12 am

This is on display in Drumchapel community Centre. it was apparantly found on a small island in the River kelvin many years ago. it origins seem to be a bit of mystery how it ended up in the kelvin. Any ideas?

The closeness of the Kelvin to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Glasgow University has to be a good starting point.

What does it say on the info card?

I am voting for it having been an attraction at a travelling circus, contracted / developed / died of anthrax and was buried on the island so as to be well away from being a danger.

My speculation is based on the fact that there is an elephant buried in soft ground near here (Castle Douglas) that was an attraction at a travelling circus, the animal then contracted / developed / died of anthrax and was safely buried. One to confuse future archaeologists :)

This can be none other than the renowned Flanders and Swan beast, immortalised in The Hippopotamus Song, (aka Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud). Brought with them as part of the SFX for their 1956 gig at The Apollo it ran amok just before Staus Quo came on and perished of cold and mercury in the Kelvin. Alternatively it might well be the mortal remains of the animal displayed around the West of Scotland in the travelling show Jonah and the Hippo.
