It doesn't even bother subscribing to the PCC which should tell you all you need to know. This story has been whipped up because some unfortunate person reacted badly to a bite by one of these spiders. There''s always someone allergic to something.

Forget about it. Wasps are much more of a problem and who loses any sleep over them?

the other one that comes to mind is the flesh eating bug scare in the mid 1990s - necrotising faschitis or something....the Daily Record picked that one up and sensationalised it......then they wonder why newspaper sales are in a downward slide. Fewer people take the papers seriously any more since there are so many other ways of finding out the news.

Unfortunately, there are many people who do succumb to the hysteria in the tabloid rags. Today, I have seen on the BBC News:

A roma girl, blond, taken by Irish authorities and later found by way of DNA testing to be the daughter of the people she was taken from. Birth certificate was not considered conclusive. A random member of the public had reported them to the police following the case in Greece.

A school in England closed for the day for fumigation following an "infestation" of false widow spiders. How many spiders where actually found was not disclosed. The creatures have been in the country for a hundred years without causing any bother.

They build these things up when they've got nothing better to do - or when someone wants something kept quiet.
