More updates are here.

First up I have realized how boring my social life has become. I spent my Saturday evening with a bottle of Brasso and the Australian sun visor;

Image

Taking this;

Image

And making it look like this;

Image

Sunday morning and I loaded up the Golf and headed down to Ed's. Johnny was still working hard getting the passenger door paint perfect;

Image

Once ready he and Ed hung it on the car before I then spent a considerable amount of time with my hand up the door like a vet with a pregnant cow. Instead of a calf I produced a door with an uppy downy window, 1/4 light and seals in place;

Image

Thanks to a top tip from Ed, the damp proof membrane came in the form of a big roll of sticky carpet protector;

Image

Unfortunately, the faffing about with the door meant that in the 8 hours I was there the only other things I got done was mounting the sun visors;

Image

And drum roll please......... The front seats are now in place;

Image

Image

At that point it was 8pm and as I was leaving, Johnny and Ed were hard at work;

Image

:-)

Saying that, Johnny had the paint cut back to this and is still to give it a wax;

Image

Image

Its really close to the finish line now.

Absolutely superb! I'd like to get my bonnet resprayed (it's black too) but the trouble is, if I do the bonnet, I'd have to do the rest of the car.....

So looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Wont need to wait much longer Delmont. It will be finished enough to come home very soon but wont get properly finished off until Im back from my travels.

I couldnt get down to Ed's today but I made myself useful in the time I had this afternoon.

When I was polishing the chrome on the sunvisor I started to notice that the black mesh had a few chips;

Image

So I masked up all the bits to stay shiny;

Image

And while it was dry and sunny outside I gave the black mesh a fresh coat of paint;

A text came through at half past ten last night from resto central and it was an exciting one.

The wings are now fully fitted with beading and the running boards and headlamps are in place;Image

That really has transformed into a thing of beauty. Can't be too far away from being done now - excited yet Dave? :)

My question is: Are you going to do a 'doors open' day with this? We (the followers) of this, want to see the finished article.

To answer both questions above.

I am just about to go to the workshop to try and have it MOT ready by the end of today. List of things to try and get done reads like this;

seat belts
Bumpers
numberplates
numberplate light
rear lights
fuel tank
fuel lines
wipers
horn
windscreen washers
brakes

And any other niggle we find today.

If MOT'd next week it will come up the road to my garage for storage while we are away for 3 weeks.

Once back from our travels we will deal with getting the inside nice. Might need to shake the change out the sofa to get carpets and a new steering wheel ordered up and fitted.

At this point if people really want a look we could do viewing of some sort. Maybe a Sunday afternoon at Springfield quay or at the riverside museum car park for anybody to get a butchers?

We will see what today brings and the update will follow.

Riverside would suit me best but there are others' who I'm sure would prefer an alternative location. Have you thought of doing a finale restoration fund? You've given us so much with this thread....perhaps we could return the favour!

Really appreciate the suggestion but feels like im holding out the begging bowl. Just happy that I found an audience on here that seem to be enjoying the process.

I spent Sunday down at Ed's but got far less done than I had hoped.

First jobs, fit fuel tank and brake fluid reservoir;

Then Bumper, horn grills, number plate and bonnet handle;

Bonnet trim;

Then wipers;

Also did a final fit of the door seals, door check straps and some tidying round before filling the tank and starting the car off the key with its own fuel supply.

Im currently working on a video showing just how much running around all these jobs took but thought I better get the latest update on here before the next one is due.

All going well there will be a BIG update coming soon. Ed and Johnny are working hard on the stuff I didnt get done on Sunday.

Another day another update.

First off, I put together a time lapse video showing the build up of the passenger door and front chrome.

But more importantly, Ed has worked his magic again and Fester saw daylight today and looks like a finished car.

I have a feeling I will be back with another update tomorrow if all goes to plan :wink:

Remember the update I was predicting would come through today? Well at 9:45am Fester was with the man from the ministry;

Image

And by 11am..................

Image

WOO-HOO!!! Never had any doubt it would be a pass but great to finally have the bit of paper.

He is coming up the road now for me to finish the interior, re-fit the aussie sun visor and hub caps and for Joanne to drive with a big smile.

Congratulations!

Excellent to see the MOT (I hate those new style certificates) but you and others' have worked so long and hard on this and we've followed this thread religiously.

I don't know what I am going to do when it's no longer a thread..... What's your next project? I believe there is a chassis of an old Concorde somewhere in Lanarkshire....

Not quite finished yet but I will keep that concorde project in mind :D

Thanks to all who stuck with the thread, Fester really is looking amazing, Ed and Johnny have worked miracles on the wee bug.

This will be the last post for a few weeks as we are away but Fester came home tonight almost 5 years to the day from when I started this thread.

He was welcomed home by the happiest Beetle owner in Scotland;

Then tucked up in the garage until we get back to finish the interior;

A HUGE thank you again to Ed and Johnny, the resto will continue in a few weeks and if we make it to the Volksfling show in Biggar at the end of May, come and have a look and a chat.
