Pronunciation.

Postby Doorstop » Mon Jan 02, 2012 1:49 pm

Something we were talking about last night were old Glaswegian pronunciations of words that you don't hear any more .. one little gem that came up was the "Co-per-ay-tiv" ('ay' as in 'hay') for the Co-op.

I instantly recognised the old pronunciation and felt incredibly guilty that I'd fallen out of using it.

The young ones had never heard of it .. what a crying shame.

Not sure if it's an oldie or still in use but the pronounciation of "mouth" in Bournemouth or Sidmouth cracks me up.

The young nurses were perplexed when told my grandpa was known as "Joke" (Jock) rather than John. Looked at us like we were helping ourselves to the drug cupboard.

The lyrics to 'A fine wee lass, a bonnie wee lass, was bonnie wee Jeannie McColl' just don't scan properly with any other pronunciation.
