Beer.

(I'll make some food in a wee while, honest. Most likely pasta, with some chorizo and broad beans and hot pepper sauce/olive oil. The Italians would rightly be appalled.)

Three, count 'em, three pouting fillets from Morrison's for £1.16. Two for tea tonight , one for lunch tomorrow. Tossed in seasoned flour, dipped in beaten egg and covered in breadcrumbs then fried. Terrific.

There were three for 40p and labelled as "Cornish." Sardines are really cheap mainly because most people prefer to buy fillets rather than cope with whole fish which have to be gutted etc though it's not a difficult job.
Tesco and Morrison's have good fish counters these days and offer quite a range but most punters still go for cod and haddock when sardines, pouting, hake and other fish are cheaper and just as good.
I note that the fishmonger, Corrigans, in Byres Rd has closed "due to market conditions."

Continuing on the fish theme, a friend had brought us two Smokies from Arbroath, haven't had them for years.
I mashed them up with some Syboes and red pepper with a baked potato and salad, delicious.
