Seriously though, I don't think for a minute that the engagement was contrived for our political oligarchs' Machiavellian pleasure, but the timing of the announcement is more than a bit fortuitous for my liking.

I'm agreeing with you - the first part not the nutter bit  ::):

All is well :D the proclamation is now that Daddy will foot the bill....but not the security bit .....

It's not just the cost. That's a whole bunch of cops who won't be available for real police work - like the guy outside Number 10. What's he for? A last line of defence?

The truth about Tory thinking seeps out.

Cameron faced demands to remove the former Cabinet minister this morning after Young claimed in an interview the vast majority of Britons had "never had it so good".

Speaking to the Telegraph, Lord Young said low interest rates meant home-owners were up to £600 a month better off thanks to the "so-called recession".

He also dismissed the 100,000 job cuts expected each year in the public sector as being "within the margin of error" in the context of a 30 million-strong workforce.

Complaints about spending cuts came from "people who think they have a right for the state to support them", he added.

"For the vast majority of people in the country today, they have never had it so good ever since this recession - this so-called recession - started, because anybody, most people with a mortgage who were paying a lot of money each month, suddenly started paying very little each month," he said.

Young has just resigned. One down.

And there it is in an old Etonian nutshell .. the way it is and, no matter what Cameron does to put a shine on it, the shape of things coming down the pipe at us all.

This government, like countless Tory governments before it has, at it's core, the fundamental belief that certain elements of society should doff their caps, accept the table scraps and be happy about their lot.

The sooner this gaggle of Bullingdon Club Bollock merchants get their marching orders, the better.

The thing is that lord young was put in charge of the attacks on health and Safety. He made similar nonsensical mutterings there but apart from safety specialist and the unions no one bothered.

I gather he's resigned.

But it wasn't enough, particularly because his unguarded comments threatened to undermine months of carefully-honed strategy aimed at persuading the public that ministers felt your pain and that we were all in this together.

Not only did he appear to imply that Chancellor George Osborne had exaggerated the difficulties the country was in, but there were resonances of an old Tory Party that didn't always seem to care as much as it might about unemployment.

David Mellor (remember him?) is on BBC trying to justify what David Young said and claiming Cameron shouldn't have condemned him.
