Speaker's Corner.

Carr's Keg.

And in between these two it was called The Pablo. It more or less depends on whether you're talking about the 60's, 70's or 80's.

Might as well complete the post 1960 set, then - it's Driftwood now (I think), but it might have been one or two things in between?

I went in one evening and sat next but one to James Cosmo who was having a dram with his wee westie next to him. I wish I had spoken to him.

Was that the Variety Bar as was (is),he was a regular in there. I'm thinking it used to be called the Norseman?
Or am I going in the wrong direction?

Old Glasgow Pubs says the Variety used to be called the Norsk Inn.

You're going in the wrong direction and the previous posts have already answered the question. The Variety Bar used to be called the Norsk so you weren't too far off there. There are several references to the Norsk on this forum but I can't be bothered seaching for them just now.

I do know that James Cosmo frequented the Griffin, just across the road, for a while because I remember having a drink with him there once, but it was nearly 30 years ago. I think he was appearing in Take The High Road at the time. On that particular occasion I lent him a book which I happened to have with me (a biography of B. Traven). I also remember that I had quite a job getting the book back off him, but in my experience that's what usually happens when you lend books to people.

It would have been Speakers Corner where I saw James Cosmo sometime in the mid 70's? I didn't usually venture that far down the West End or indeed up the town

but before that we used to go to a pub across the way and down a bit and on the left on sauchiehall street...may have been the last pub on that side - and if I remember correctly there may have been a casino across from it ( I may be totally wrong on that part?) but I would like to know the name of the pub as its bugged me for too long...so please put me out my misery and tell what it was called so i can sleep better at nights...

thanks

yes thats the pub thanks - but what was it called in the early/mid 90's? from what I remember it was black on the outside and I dont think it was yates...was a busy busy place on a saturday night..

It was, as has been alluded to, a 'Brentford Nylons' many years ago - it opened as a pub in the late 90s under the name of "It's A Scream". I worked in the office building next door (Newton House) from August 97 - October 99.

"It's A Scream" was the name of the chain which built it's pubs to look like student unions and in the early days would only let students in. It was called The Hall because it was near Baird Hall of Residence which belonged to Strathclyde University.

I used to drink in Speaker's Corner when I lived in Grant Street in 1976. There was another bar just around the corner on the way to St. George's X that I had the odd drink in, too. Can't remember its name, though. It may have been part of a hotel. As far as I know there isn't a bar at that location, any more. Anyone remember its name?

The Charing Cross Hotel , part of the then Stakis Chain.

Used as short-term (ish) accomodation for Stakis staff - mainly casino restaurant people - in the eighties (and possibly much longer, but I can't vouch for that personally). I didn't know it had been a hotel, but in retrospect I suppose I should have guessed.

As with many other Stakis hotels it was very popular on Sundays. Its popularity diminished when the pubs opened.

I lived in Park Road during the 1970's and used to visit the Charing Cross Hotel now and again on Sundays. It was always absolutely mobbed. To make matters worse the special licence stipulated waitress service only, you couldn't just go up to the bar and order a drink. I think it was around 1976 that pubs were allowed to open on Sundays with the result that most of these "hotel" establishments began falling by the wayside. Another place I remember was the Western Hotel, which stood on the corner of Burnbank Terrace and Great Western Road.
