Probably was The Grafton after all, then, although I can't seem to associate the name with the pub. Perhaps my memory's just playing tricks on me again. Nothing unusual about that these days.

Would that building have been painted white and then sandblasted back?

A lot of people came and went from The Grafton via the car park in the lane at the back. This would be in the days when drink-driving hadn't attained the social stigma it has now. I don't recall a sign at rear so it's possible some folks didn't actually know the pub's name.

Previously The Bombardier.

It was the Scaramouche for yonks, then (I believe) The Observatory and then Bollywood Lounge. I think it has changed names again recently. The hotel has been called a lot of names too including the Greek Thomson.

I'm sure that was just a cafe with no drinks licence.

Ir was. The best haddock 'n' chips in town.

In the late eighties, though, they opened up a proper (and pretty large) restaurant next door, which did have a drinks licence. It was never a pub per se though. And the cafe was never the same again.

I worked in the (probably soon to be fucked thanks to the coalition) Criminal Injuries Compensation place located in the adjacent Tay House circa 1994-1997.

My mind must be going as I would have sworn that prior to being an Irish theme bar around that time (unique in that it did attract many Irish people) that it was occupied by one of the first dirt cheap supermarket chains; which being licensed included spectacular prices for bevvy.
