help needed in remembering pub name up sauchiehall street..

Postby cjinlancs » Sat Feb 06, 2010 1:22 am

howdy folks,

first post and all that...but have been a lurker on this site for quite a while...

now in my younger clubbing days back in the early to mid 90's we all used to go to the mayfair on sauchiehall st..(I know, I know..but I was young and the music was loud  ) but before that we used to go to a pub across the way and down a bit and on the left on sauchiehall street...may have been the last pub on that side - and if I remember correctly there may have been a casino across from it ( I may be totally wrong on that part?) but I would like to know the name of the pub as its bugged me for too long...so please put me out my misery and tell what it was called so i can sleep better at nights...

look forward to finding out..

thanks

Wasn't that Brentford Nylons back in the 90s?

Pretty sure that's where my sister had her 21st-birthday party, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it! That was in the days of that multi-storey edifice of dance-hall wonderment, Zanibar, which was across the road and up a bit!!

The Blob Shop perhaps? It was a cheap-as-chips bar on the south/west side of Sauchiehall St near Charing X.

No, I think that was just two doors down from Sleazy's.

It was indeed Brentford Nylons, but perhaps not as late as the 90s.

They did themselves no favours with that name as they actually sold cottons and poly cottons too.

Equi was on the south side of Sauchiehall Street a few doors east of the photograph.

There's an Equi in Hamilton. Dunno if it's the same folks.

They opened up a quite large Italian restaurant directly next door to the cafe/fish and chip shop in the late eighties.

I take it from Autolycus' reply that it's not there anymore - I hadn't noticed. I must have a look next time I'm in the vicinity. I don't know whether they overreached themselves with the restaurant or they sold out for large sums of money and retired to live the good life on the proceeds.

The original shop did an excellent haddock and chips - my first full-time job was across the road, and I used to go there regularly.

I got on quite well with the son who worked in the cafe, who I'm guessing would have been the one you went to school with.

The Hamilton shop was at Peacock Cross, and was still there the last time I was in the area a couple of years ago. The shop next door was the only place in the known universe that sold Hamilton Academical shirts, one of which is the only item of sports wear I have ever possessed. :)

You deduced correctly Mr Josef I did indeed go to school with the owner's son.
They had that cafe for a long time.
I am old enough as well to remember when Dino's opened down the road - is there a rambling thread?

Was Equi the little time-warp cafe which was just a little further up Sauchiehall Street from the Google image posted by Dex? Closed early-mid 90's as I remember.
Eeeh, it's all coming flooding back. I'm trying to remember exactly where Casa Records was now.
