Despite regulary passing through / being in the area I appear to have bizarrely failed to notice that Jaconelli's is no longer there - it still appears to be a chippie but with a different name and horrible modern signage. I used to regularly dine out there after a Thistle game before heading for a good post-match booze-up. It saddened my heart to see that this great Maryhill institution is no more.

The Cafe is still there or it was last week.

when they ripped the jaconellis sign down the old old sign was there looked cool

the family still have the chippy at the avenue in maryhill
but pretty sure its the daughter and her hubbie who run it, as
old mr jac and his mrs have gone back to italy......

Thanks for the SP Big Jim. I thought the one further up Maryhill Rd would be related. Didn't have time to take in what the place is now called (was driving) but I can well believe it's bowfin' (like 99% of Glasgow chippies). Are there any decent chippies left in Glasgow? I often end up driving to the Marina Cafe in Troon for an edible fish supper.

I live near the cafe and meet friends there from time to time.
The Jaconelli family sold the premises at Queen's Cross a few years ago but still own the shop near Gairbraid Avenue. The new owner had planned to 'refurbish' the cafe but was disuaded from so doing by regulars who threatened never to return - the Herald did a magazine feature on the story at the time. To his credit he listened and kept it as it was.
I believe that he got the Jaconelli's name and ice-cream recipe a part of the deal. The ice-cream is still superb and is a treat after a walk along the canal on a summer's evening.
I've a terrific snap of a group of young people in Jaconelli's in May 1960; apart from the updated jukebox, which now has CDs, it's the same today.
I can't post the snap - copyright - but I'll bring it to the next HG night out.

a knickerbocker glory ,not an afterthought for health

plenty salt and vinegar to splash upon your chips
and not from plastic sachets with little tear of strips
every kind of sweetie, served from those big glass jars
soor plooms ,sherbet dabs and loads of chocolate bars

now once again big business,he put his big foot down
he bullied wee luigi and kicked him out of town
now every chip gets counted and every burger weighed
exceed just thirteen minutes and your welcomes overstayed.

the cafe is still there and still does Morton rolls and square and still does jacconelli ice cream as someone said was part of the deal when sold the rest of the family have moved to garbraid ave maryhill were Lawrence and Paul jacconelli have a chip shop prop the best in maryhill and still get there father in now and then to make ice cream

Had a couple of those Morton rolls and square yesterday:

Two full Scottish Breakfasts, two rolls 'n' sausage, one cheeseburger, one cheese omelette and chips, three teas and a coffee for twenty quid.

And proper rolls, too.

Took the family there for lunch today & who should appear but Tam Dean Burn with his family!

I think the extended family had in the 60s a café on Maryhill rd between the library and the pub on corner of Lochburn rd,and another up next to the Royal bank at Shiskine dr, that one was the biggest of all three.
