It would certainly be slow news if it took a year to get there. :)

The Glaswegian

Glasgow is crowned Curry Capital of Britain for record fourth time

Feb 24 2011

THE Curry Capital of Britain title returned to Glasgow on Monday as owners of top Indian restaurants joined the Lord Provost Bob Winter for a celebratory lunch.
It's the fourth time in 10 years Glasgow has taken the title and this year it's thanks largely to the four of the city's leading eateries.
Balbirs, KoolBa, Mister Singh's and the Mother India Cafe were chosen as curry ambassadors for Glasgow in a public vote.
The Lord Provost presented each of the quartet with an engraved silver plate. He said: "Winning the Curry Capital of Britain title is very much down to our four ambassadors and it's only right we acknowledge their hard work and dedication."
The Lord Provost is pictured with, from left, Balbir Sumal of Balbirs , Fattah Haddad of KoolBa, Monir Mohammed of Mother India and Bobby Singh of Mr Singh's.
No other city has won the coveted prize more than once.

Curry Capital 2011

The race is on to find out who will be the Curry Capital of Britain in 2011.

Glasgow was delighted to win the Curry Capital of Britain in 2010, the competition will be as hot as ever this year so we need your help to hold on to the title!

By voting you have a chance to win a year's supply of Cobra beer (12 cases) and a year's supply of Patak's (sauces, naan, poppadum, chutney and pickle) – to enter the free draw just include your contact details when submitting the restaurant of your choice.

You can vote for your favourite Indian restaurant:

Online
By Phone – 020 8399 4831
By Post - download the form

Four restaurants will be chosen to represent each city in the final – so vote now to make sure your favourite is in the running to be an ambassador for Glasgow.

We know that Glasgow is the home of a good curry but we want to prove this to the rest of Britain. For years our fantastic Indian restaurants have served up inventive and fiery dishes to warm the culinary heart. We are proud to say that curry is up there as our adoptive national dish - over 50% of Glasgow’s population eat a curry at least once a week.

Closing date for nominations is Friday 26 August 2011.

I want to put a word in on this thread for the Viceroy on Paisley Road. We don't tend to sit in as it's close to home, but we do go to them a lot. I worry about them as they''re awfy quiet. But they're good, and incredibly friendly. It's only been open about a year (I think they have restaurants elsewhere). They're a damn site better than the Ashoka at the Quay, and the Kabana round the corner. Recommended if you're heading to the Quay for the cinema etc.

Put it this way, we swore they'd never get our business after they nearly brought the block down by taking out supporting walls when they were renovating! But they won us over :)

hungryjoe wrote:I was back at Cafe Salma in Sauchiehall St. on Tuesday. I tried another dish and as before, the food was fabulous. I had Lamb, and I can't remember if it was a city Name like Bombay or just Punjab Karahi with a plain Pratha. My dining partner had lamb Afghani Burianni. Both tasted fantastic. With complementary water and no other drinks (no alcohol), the bill, including a 10% ish tip was 21 quid.
I'll be back, but next time I'll have my lamb off the bone. It might taste better on the bone but I'd imagine you get more meat off the bone.

I've been back twice recently, the food is still wonderful.

I almost tried the Banana Leaf on Old Dumbarton Rd for the first time tonight, but didn't*; Is it still good and worth going back to try it another time?

* There were 5 of us in our group and when we got there 2 of them were put off by the small size and the low-key surroundings. I particularly liked the porch door to enter the restaurant. My theory is that a place putting that little effort into presentation must have bloody good food!

In this case, your theory is correct.

I was never a fan of Indian cuisine prior to visiting Banana Leaf.

I don't know if it applies to all their outlets.
