The Smiddy Bar, Partick......

Postby Big Ramy » Sun Sep 30, 2007 1:28 am

Brand new tae the board here, but I have tae ask a wee question. Is the Smiddy Bar shut down? I havnae been home in 3 years and I heard The Smiddy has closed.

I was born in Govan, but whenever I was over I stayed wae ma Aunti who lived in Partick. She lived on Purden St, jist up the road fae The Smiddy.

Had some great laughs there.

Is it gone?

Cottiers is nice, but unbelievably expensive. Don't waste your wedge in there..... :P

I hope you don't actually mean 'for miles' around. There are far, far, better pubs within a few hundred yards of the 3 Judges.

I'd cite the Lismore, The Chip and the Ben Nevis; all within peeing distance of the Judges and all, head and shoulders, better bars. Jeez, even the Aragon is a better bar than the 3 Judges............

and the Aragon is shite

A different opinion on the Three Judges.

"A tremendous little boozer and the haunt of an eclectic crowd, The Three Judges looks like any unremarkable corner room from the exterior - but inside has plenty to recommend it."

Re: Partick Pubs

My favourite Partick pub was Reid's of Pertyck, at the junction of Dumbarton Road and Church Street. It changed hands around 1990, and since then it's been The West End Bar, Zoo, Solid Rock West and now, Gallus.

It's owned by Bellhaven now, and had a big refurb 2 or 3 years ago, when they did away with the lounge, turning it into one big space. However, that bit that used to be the lounge is a disaster area. The seating is the most uncomfortable I've ever experienced. You have to have good limbo dancing skills to get into them, and when you're seated, your feet dangle in the air. It brought back memories of being a wean in a high chair.

They need to rethink that area, and have another refurb. It must be putting people off coming back. Apart from that, it's worth a visit for the Bellhaven Export, and it's good for sports. Doesn't get as crowded as the Rock, Tennent's or Aragon.

I popped into Granny Gibbs on Saturday and Colin confirmed that it was called Mullens.

Refugees from the Rosevale (destroyed by a flaming bin) were made welcome on the condition that they behaved themselves or they would be barred both from the Lismore and the Rosevale when it re opened. Similar advice was handed to the regulars already in Mullens.

(apart from being barred from the Rosevale of course)
