Partick Pubs

Postby edowds » Tue Sep 11, 2007 7:49 am

My son and his girlfriend have just moved to Partick, can anyone recommend good pubs in the area, which ones have good grub and which pubs should they avoid?

Ta!

Partick Tavern and The Clyde Valley have been known to get a bit wild at times. There are also the usual caveats about Rangers and Celtic pubs, which Partick has its fair share of - although they are easily spotted particularly on midweek matchdays.

The Lismore is very nice, good atmosphere, folk music - fantastic selection of malts. The Three Judges is a good traditional pub, with decent pub grub

I quite like Whistler's Mother on Byres Rd - bit pricey but very nice.

Most of the Indian restaurants in the area are ok, with Balbir's on Church St being the best, for more Oriental tastes I would recommend Chow's on Byres Rd. The Manchurian near the bottom of Crow Rd is also pretty good.

Rio Cafe on Dowanhill Street is good. It's more a pub/diner than cafe but sells good cheap grub and often has great live music. And Cottiers beer garden and barbecue is great on a hot summers day.

Without a shadow of a doubt, The Three Judges is the best pub for miles around. But don't discount the Gallus Bar or the 500 club over the road.
Cottiers is nice, but unbelievably expensive. Don't waste your wedge in there..... :P

I hope you don't actually mean 'for miles' around. There are far, far, better pubs within a few hundred yards of the 3 Judges.

I'd cite the Lismore, The Chip and the Ben Nevis; all within peeing distance of the Judges and all, head and shoulders, better bars. Jeez, even the Aragon is a better bar than the 3 Judges............

and the Aragon is shite
238 to 127. All in all a good afternoon's work

I was there on Thursday, thought it was really nice. Will post in restaurant reviews so as not to take this off-topic. It seemed more restuaranty than pubby!

It would seem my opinion is less than universally accepted !!! 8O

Well I like the Judges, never had a dirty glass and always enjoyed every single beer. Bear in mind I am an ale hound - so The Lismore is splendid too, but no beer ! (Well they have one token ale, and it is always iffy, tastes of vinegar and they insist on pouring it through one of those filter titty things. But on the plus side the whiskey flows mightilly ! By the Chip, I guess you mean the tiny bar in Ashton Lane? - Again very nice, but no ale. -Ben Nevis, haven't found that one yet.... Gallus is fine by me too.

Maybe 'miles around' was not quite Ordnance Survey accurate but you knew what I meant eh ? :D

Ang on, this has made me bloody thirsty. See you in the Judges at 3 !!!!
