Duke Street History

Postby Gerry Andrews » Fri Oct 25, 2013 11:56 am

I'm about to take on the task of helping re-inventing Mills Bar at the corner of Duke Street and Garfield.

Apart from the obvious sources like The History of Dennistoun, The East End Exhibition and Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show timelines, I was hoping that someone out there could point me in the direction of less well known sources of info about Mills Bar and Duke Street in general. Architects, local ne'erdo-well's & characters, ephemera and stories.

Thanks

I have been researching my family tree and this may be of interest I was wondering if anyone had photos or any information on my great great grandfathers business what follows is everything I know about it.

George William Hendrie owned the business and ran it along with his 2 brothers William and Matthew (my great great grandfather) it was advertised in the Glasgow trade directory. The firm acquired a great prestige within the trade and the patronage of various VIP s of the day further denoted its growing sucsess. They also made rugs for Alexander's coaches.

Mills bar had a framed history posted on the wall.
It was written by John Gorevan of http://www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk/

Also as part of Mitch's work last year he and others interviewed people about the history and surrounding area for http://drawdukestreet.wordpress.com/ and http://dialectograms.co.uk/category/duke-street/

Contact info is at each of those sites.
