Josef, it took me most of the day to glean that small amount of information, nice to have a task to do again. :D

I wonder if the bar was under that name for a short period of time? It may explain why it does not show up in the records (so far)
And yet I have a gut feeling that in those old B&W days, pubs and other commercial concerns remained under the same ownership for many years, just a feeling, Robert Pool might know if this was true.
Yes Bridie, you do.

D'ye know (and I'm sure you do) - this place can be quite dull at times. But give us something to do and we're right on it.

The best thread on here, by a country mile, is our resident Slimcea boy Alex's "Help! Where is this?". In recent days we've had the Norwegian Ship Museum thing.

Perhaps we ought to have more of this. Up with this sort of thing!, as Father Ted would doubtless have said.

Who/what was it/they ? Sounds quite Lovecraftian.

Sorry,' Beneld', looking back, I noticed that you had already proposed this.

In the photo below, you are saying that the pub is to the front and right of the camera position?

Where exactly is the foundation stone at the Mitchell?

Regarding the guy holding his ears, what bell was ringing?

Ygorra as in "You've got to'.

A 'rag week' student publication in the days when going to University was a fairly exclusive pursuit.

Position of bar: probably right where you describe.
Bell ringing: what i thought was a bell in Carnegies hand is probably the trowel.

I am still puzzled by the sign though. Seems a bit of sloppy sign making:
Here is the GlenLeven from the video without the gas lamp (although it could be when it was next door)
http://www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk/glenleven.html In the video they removed a letter to put the gas standard on. For this mystery bar they moved the letters either side which would imply the standard was there before the name was put up and would have made sense to have a name that just avoided the standard.
Its also strange to me that in the picture the bar is wide enough to have "And*ws Bar" but in the great pictures you have found the width barely fits Andrews. If the bar used to be next door in the Bells shop it would make sense especially for the windows. In the Carnegie picture there is a window to the left of the door with at least "Pale Ale" on it but in the newer pics no window.

:-)

Digging about ;
http://www.britishpathe.com/video/still ... asgow-fire
the stills from 15-18 seconds show the Andrews bar in the '63 picture a bit unclearly. The lighter top
and the white shield make it stand out a bit. no real use but was interesting finding it.

The foundation stone is to the right hand side of the North St entrance on the side of the dome cylinder (don't know the architectural term) facing onto Berkeley St, roughly in line with that Morris car in the pic above.

And here's a pic I found on Flickr

I was on the committee of Glasgow Student Charities Appeal (under whose auspices Ygorra was published) when the edition on the left was published. There was a very lively discussion over which young lady would be most effective in earning the most severe disapproval from Glasgow District Council. This of course would guarantee Evening Times front page stories and record sales.

Funnily enough it wasn't. Penthouse supplied about 20 images for us free of charge to decide. We knew that putting a topless model on the cover for the first time should guarantee us huge controversy (and we weren't wrong). Unsurprisingly the female members of the executive committee were less keen on the idea but they went with it in the end. In those days Glasgow's Rag Week was the most successful in the UK raising many thousands of pounds for local charities.

Aberdeen usually did better than Glasgow with a smaller population. The Aberdeen Students Charity Committee is still going strong in an era when students are more involved in single issue campaigns.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.
