Remembering old Snooker Halls

Postby Alanangles » Wed Oct 24, 2012 10:33 pm

Hi all, can anyone remember the name and location of some old Glasgow snooker halls? I'm sure there was one on Sauchiehall St where Firewater now resides! Any additions would be welcome, cheers.

I don't know Firewater but there was a basement snooker hall on Sauchiehall St just east of Holland Street. That the place?

Another was where The Tunnel Club is/ was on MItchell Street and yet another at the corner of Trongate/ Stockwell Street. Another on Gt George Street.

Yes, I had a mis-spent youth.

The George Snooker Hall in Great George Street, Hillhead (where M&S now stands).
The Snooker Hall above what is the 'Cooker Factory?' at Garscube/Maryhill Road....
I think there may have been one around New City Road but don't know if my memory is playing tricks with that one.
Oh and the Glasgow University Union used to have a great Snooker Room with many tables along with the numerous bars....

The Crucible snooker hall owned by Mamie Lang with 'input' from Hurricane Higgins was in Blythswood Court.

There was one at the St George's Cross end of Maryhill Rd. I believe it went on fire.

The first pic is of the billiards hall above the Queen's Cross Vaults at er, Queen's Cross in 1960. The second is at the start of Maryhill Rd at St. George's Cross - it's now called Clarendon Place. There was a major fire there in 1972 which led to the demolition of the buildings from the snooker hall onwards. I think I've posted some pics of it on HG, Fireman posted some too. I think there was a snooker hall opposite the Seamore Cinema but don't have any pics and can't recall the name.

Durachdan,

Eddy

The basement snooker hall in Sauchiehall street was the Premier. There was another basement snooker hall called The Imperial in Mitchell Lane. There was an electricity meter at each table that took 50 pence pieces. I think you got about 20 mins for 50p before the over table light went out.
