Looking for the name of a firm of electrical wholesalers operating in 1950's and 60's, possibly west end / Partick and info about whether it was bought over or went out of business

I used to work in Woodside for GEC in the 70s and was thinking Partick = Edmundson Electrical in Thurso Place but they were/are a branch of a multiple and I doubt they would have traded under that name in the 50s or 60s.

McPhail & Meikle in Finnieston was a valued customer (not big but well respected) Bob McPhail was a director. I don't recall any other electrical wholesalers in the west end area, most seemed to be south of the Clyde where the bulk of the industry was.

I worked in McPhail & Meikle and Bob McPhail used to come in almost every day. He was a really nice old guy. Used to make a point of talking to everyone and seeing that we were all ok.

Just saw this thread so l thought l would put in my bit.

In the 1950's - 80's McPhail & Meilke Ltd were located in West Campbell Street with Bob McPhail (thats right it's the Bob McPhail that played for Rangers FC and who's medals are proudly displayed in the trophy room at ibrox) at the head of the business, assisted by his son Robbie and later his nephew John joined the company around the late 70's early 80's. They later moved to Elliot Street if l remember correctly and eventually merged with Colin Heggie's Meridian Ltd who were originally located at the Baltic Chambers, Cadogan Street for many years. The largest wholesalers in Scotland, or electrical factors as they used to be called, was Clyde Factors (Electrical) Ltd in Washington Street. I wonder what ever happened to Robbie and John. I think i'm right in saying Robbie was a qualified lawyer.. not sure about John.

Robert Pool (ex Clyde Factors)

ps when l was 15 years old l remember asking Mr McPhail about Mr Meilkle and was told there never was a Mr Meilkle!

Great post Robert. A lot of names came back to me upon reading it.

Clyde Factors, Elliot Street, Meridian Electric et al.

I remember meeting old Bob once or twice in the early eighties - and he must have been in his eighties - but a gentleman nonetheless.

As for :

ps when l was 15 years old l remember asking Mr McPhail about Mr Meilkle and was told there never was a Mr Meilkle

I'd suggest it was a contraction of the name of Bob's old team mate Davie Meiklejohn. He was gently kidding you on.
