Years ago I went out with a lassie (now sadly deed) whose dad was a junior civil engineer on this project (in fact he claimed to be partlly responsible for this fiasco). I won't put his name in although I do remember it.

He said that the bridge structure was supposed to house shops and that the reason they were never built was that somebody pointed out after they'd built the platform that there was no way to deliver any stock to the said shops and therefore no-one would lease them.

Only after this was there a proposal for housing and that was knocked on the heed cos, again, naebody would wanna live there.

At the time I was told this (mid 80's) the guy was a senior Civil Engineer with Glasgow Council, so I've always kinda believed it. Anyways, it kinda rings true/makes sense, doesn't it?

Passed the pedestrian bridge to nowhere yesterday and someone in a hi-vis vest was working on it. It was at the western end, where it spirals down to ground level. Not only that, but it's had temporary safety rails put up where they were missing at that end, so something is going on there...

It's a sharp left and one minutes walk from my house. I'll take a ganders and see what's what. Need to buy new batteries for my camera to collect some evidence, if indeed there's any to be had.

Will city’s bridge to nowhere be going somewhere at last?

GLASGOW'S bridge to nowhere has taken a step towards completion.

It has been picked as one of the projects to help a transport charity net a
lottery windfall.

The half-finished pedestrian bridge over the M8 at Anderston has made it
on to Sustrans' final list of schemes which will now go forward for a
£50million jackpot.

If the Sustrans bid is successful, the completed bridge would link cycle and
pedestrian routes to the Clyde waterfront, Glasgow Central Station and
Kelvingrove Park.

Bridge to Nowhere at Anderston

Possibly a little way from the BTN, etc. however my Dad used to work on Clydeferry Street in the olden times (1950s), he recalls a chemists that had an 'officially licenced/sanctioned' opium den in the back shop specifically to cater for visiting Chinese sailors - maybe just South of Anderston Station and where today's road junctions are?

Btw; - was it the Geographia City Map that used to call it Anderson?

GLASGOW'S Bridge To Nowhere could finally be finished after 40 years - if city residents can use their gift of the gab to persuade television viewers to vote for a £1million project.

Transport charity Sustrans, which is behind the attempt to complete the half-finished pedestrian bridge over the M8 at Anderston, needs the help of people whose lives would be improved if it was finished.

People willing to spell out how it would affect them could find themselves on national TV helping make the case for National Lottery funding.

Sustrans has drawn up a list of 79 schemes in the running for a share of Lottery cash.

Connect2

PDF

The Connect2 Project plans to connect the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ over the M8 corridor, creating a number of safe and attractive routes for pedestrians and cyclists between Glasgow’s West End, the Clyde Waterfront and City Centre.
The M8 cuts through the middle of Glasgow and is an obstacle to walking and cycling, particularly as the main footbridge planned to take people over the motorway was never completed. We plan to complete this bridge, known as the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’, to take you safely over the M8 corridor by foot or bike.
The bridge is central to our plans to create a network of walking and cycling routes across the city which will make it possible for you to make your everyday journeys by foot or bike. The new footpath and cycle path over the M8 will connect up to a second bridge that will take you over the busy Clydeside Expressway and along to the Anderston Quay and riverside promenades. Other new links will mean you will also be able to walk or cycle directly from the West End and Kelvingrove Park to the City Centre and Glasgow Central Station. You can see here how the scheme might look and how the new routes will connect communities on either side of the motorway. We plan to work closely with the local
community to plant more greenery, create community artwork along the paths, and install attractive seating and signs.
We will create an environment that welcomes and encourages people to walk and cycle as part of their everyday lives.

Connect2 – Help Complete the 'Bridge to Nowhere'
Glasgow needs YOU to vote to complete the 'Bridge to Nowhere' over the M8 at Anderston

About the Bridge to Nowhere

The M8 Anderston footbridge was originally planned as the main pedestrian route over the Motorway to link into the Anderston shopping centre. However, it was never completed and subsequently became the iconic 'Bridge to Nowhere'.
Completing the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ would help link the communities on either side of the motorway, allowing pedestrians, wheelchair users and cyclists to travel directly and without traffic between the city centre, the Clyde riverside promenades, Kelvingrove Park and the West End. Glasgow City Council is developing proposals to complete the bridge and build the linking traffic free routes by bidding for funding through ‘Connect2’.

"The cost of the Bridge to Nowhere plan is around £2.5m and the lottery would provide £1m towards it."

Is there a plan to raise the other £1.5 million?
