That is painful, it really is.

Even the taxi is cheap and gaudy. And that shitty surface on the square looks like a red ash pitch. And that lassie that's just crossed the road could make mair of an effort too.

Nice one Ken.

I was born in 1973 and spent the first two years of my life in Hayburn Street, just around the corner in a room and kitchen above the undertakers

Shouldn't you be called Patches

I was born and raised down in Alabama on a farm way back up in the woods. Oh
I was so ragged folks used to call me "Patches". Papa used to tease
me about
it, but deep down inside dad was hurtin` `cause he`d done the best he could.

Surely the current bridge structure is older than 1973 ? It looks exactly the same.

Did they just replace the bridge decking and not the girders?

It is 1973 going by the caption. But it already must be inaccurate by claiming the whole structure is being replaced, so I wouldn't trust it too far.
A fair number of photos on xxxx seem to have duff info on the captions.

Sorry i've mucked up the 'Past - Present' thread flow a bit.

I find it a shame that Scran charges for this service, when other depositories of photographs such as the Virtual Mitchell and RCAHMS provide a free service, anyone know why??

To be honest Scran is good for the more unusual, newspaper, & social event stuff, but i'd always place the Mitchell, & RCAHMS collections way above it for area, & building views.

I did a search for the RCAHMS on Google last Friday, and was a bit embarrased to discover that a lot of the photos I wanted on Scran, were actually to be found on there all the time  :(
Images of old Glasgow depots, etc, was especially what I was after, fantastic stuff on there.

SCRAN had its funding cut and staff were made redundandant. Perhaps you should contact your MSP's and ask why.

The best things in life are free is only a song title not a mantra. in the absence of adequate funding do yoi have any other suggestions as to how free they make.

As has been pointed out if you are a public library member you can access its library.

There's a shock! The Square looks pishier today than its' classy old look. Compare the lamp posts of yesteryear with today's efforts. Rip down a lovely old church and replace it with erm fuck all. Get rid of the wee road that encircles the buildings and replace it with a dull flat featureless surface. And just to finish the effect, pull down St Enoch's Station and replace it with a big fuckin greenhoose.

By the way, that looks like underground public toilets next to the wee St Enoch's underground building.
