It was the loss of the interior that was the biggest lament regarding the Toledo, it was the best surviving example by far in Scotland of an "atmospheric" style interior, with the little buildings along the sidewall and a ceiling meant to represent an open sky in a courtyard.

The architect was William Beresford Inglis, of Beresford Hall fame. He also had a hand in the design of the Rogano. It was full of lovely detailing, such as pantiled roofs on the wee buildings, twisty ironwork on the windows and colourful bullfighting tiles.

He built similar cinemas in Anniesland (the Boulevard/Vogue) and in Cambuslang (the Ritz), both long demolished.

Here's a wee gallery of what's been lost, if anyone wants to make a Past Present of the exteriors, feel free!

Exterior by night when fairly new:

Foyer, what was originally the pay desk, latterly the shop:

Screen 1, the former balcony extended forward, shortly before demolition:

Ditto, looking to front right - some of the false walls erected in the 1982 subdivision were removed to allow more detailed photography prior to demolition:

Or how about the pie-in-the-sky plan to have a 20,000 seater ground?

Well, you never know, they'll have to seat all the spectators for the Junior Cup Finals somewhere......

Offering local youths a delightful location to partake of a chilled glass of Le Vin Tonic on a summer afternoon, in between punting on the canal and gang fighting.

That was some building, never seen it from that side before.
Interesting to see there's a wee bit still remaining.

Another James Miller masterpiece that succumbed to vandalism and neglect. The enclosure is now used to house a shitey portacabin, a banged up white van and occasionally a fat, old, dodgy-looking bloke.

Such a shame.

Tim

When will your excellent looking site be complete?

I note the picture of the tunnel portal under the Kelvinbridge option isn't described in the section itself. Is this to be done?
