Springburn Winter Gardens
The land for Springburn Park was acquired by Glasgow Corporation in 1892. At this time the land was indifferent agricultural land with the remains of an ironstone pit at one corner and an old quarry at the other. The original park was extended in 1900 through the benevolence of Hugh Reid, who purchased part of the nearby lands of Cockmuir and gifted them to the city in order that they could enlarge the park.

The Winter Gardens were built by Glasgow Corporation as a condition for accepting a £12,000 gift from Hugh Reid of the North British Locomotive Company to finance the construction of the nearby Springburn Public Halls.

The Winter Gardens were much loved by generations of Springburn residents for their displays of exotic plants and for the concerts and exhibitions held there. Despite being classified as an A-Listed building, the Winter Gardens have remained derelict for the last 20 years.

That's a disgrace. I foresee a "fire" in the not too distant future...

Heritage

Postby Delmont St Xavier » Thu Jan 11, 2007 9:51 pm

Looking at the pictures of the 'Old Railway', one wonders what our transport system would have been like today had they not closed the lines in the early years and of course the Beeching cuts of the 60's proved to be unpopular and with hindsight unwise. However nothing was more disasterous than allowing the former 'line' to be used for housing development.

I wonder how many of us would have used the system today?

I reckon I would've, particularly when I stayed up at Kirklee. But then ever since I was wee I've had a thing about old railways, and always want them reopened! It fascinates me how everywhere was so well connected, in Glasgow and elsewhere. The routes that they had over Speyside and even parts of the Black Isle seem incredible today because they are so isolated.

A very nice example of bringing a derelict building back to life!

Rebuilding the left chimney stack was a nice touch.

Not adding 3 extra floors in glass to make it 'economically viable' was an even better touch ;)

I must say though, I hadn't realised the building had been in such a run-down state before they refurbished it... or that that has been as recently as 1985!

Nice one!

Does the 'MER' stand for 'Merrylee'? I've forgotten most of the old Glasgow letter dialling codes.

Off the top of my head the ones I can remember are:

DOUglas
CENtral
SOUth
BRIdgeton
IBRox

Probably a few more if I sat down and thought about it.

Looks like they did a really good job, it looked to be on it's last legs - that it was saved rather than being knocked down shows what can be done! 8)

WEStern
GOVan
BELl
LANgside

et al: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/count ... &county=72

BT still use the exchange codes in the naming schema. Central is WSCEN (West of Scotland Central) for example.
