My dad moved to another empty shop unit on the corner of watt st for another few years untill that was served with the order for demolition too for the M8.

The gap sites like the one in the 2nd pic started to appear around that area during the late 60s onwards to make way for the M8, i'm not sure if that gap is a post ww2 gap site.

I think There used to be a pub called the Red Hackle around there somewhere, Pollok Snacks chip shop also on Paisley rd in front of the kingston halls.

Guess the name of the shop was called Akbars then?

Was born at 48 Pollok St. 1958 right in the centre of the street, where the postcard picture was taken.

Yes it was Akbars, Akbar was my dads nephew who was a partner with my dad in the business, i helped out at the weekends by standing on a wooden ginger crate to serve the customers. :D

Great site and Topic.

Was the shop on the corner of Ardgowan St and Watt St? I seem to remember being sent there to get some messages and was there a scrap yard nearby?

I also seem to remember a bakers/shop on the middle block but on the Houston St side where you could get broken biscuits in a bag. Anyone else remember?

I'm doing the family history and was looking for info or photos on Pollok St. I lived in Pollok St around 1965 when I was about 4 and lived in the middle block, not sure of the number, opposite the Maxwell church where i joined the Boys Brigade, I think. Went to Scotland St school. I remember building dens with old doors from somewhere against the midden houses and the council coming to knock them down. Playing football and using washing line poles as goals. We moved out I was about 7/8 to a new housing estate in Kilmarnock called New Farm Loch.

My memory isn't that good at the moment, so things might be muddled, hence the queries.

Christ on a bike!

Some of my earliest memories are of being handed sweeties by Akbar. He and my father got on really well.

My first home as an infant was 101 Ardgowan Street.

What a wee gem to find here. Thanks people.

my grandparents(mums mum and dad) lived on shields road at number 17 and there was a bakery at the corner of houston street/watt street which sold bags of broken biscuits which i think were from the gray dun factory
vaguely remember there being a pawnbrokers being across on the opposite corner from the bakers but it was demolished and all i remember is a large gap site from the pub up to the corner of houston street.
i remember the laundrette on pollock street where my granny used to send me with washing for a service wash after it closed the nearest laundrette was down paisley road opposite plantation park as far as i can recall like yourself these things get lost in the mists of time

In reference to the war memorial at Maxwell Church, Pollok St...

I passed a link on to a friend of mine who specialises in war memorials and such, in the off chance he hadn't seen it.
After discussing it with a friend he found this info about the current wherabouts of the memorial.
You will probably already know this but it may of help to someone....

I found this site while surfing the net and may be able to add some information.
I lived on Ardgowan Street from the mid-fifties until the mid-sixties. I attended Scotland Street School then moved on to Lambhill Street after that.
At the corner of Pollok & Ardgowan there was Akbar's, Maxwell Parish Church (where I was a Lifeboy(68th) and then the BB(15th)), a pub and then a bookies. I can't remember if the bookies was on the corner or one store in from Pollok St.
At Watt & Ardgowan there was a Cash & Carry, Buist's the baker (I worked there one summer), a Fish and Chip shop and a pub (The Shieling (sp??)).
Each of the gardens on Pollok St. had railings and were off limits to all. If you got caught inside them you would get a telling off from many of the residents. At the top of Pollok there was a newsagents where we bought sweets and things on our way to school. That's all for now. If i remember anything else I will write it up.

“Pollok St. looking North”
I struggle to see it and I can’t explain the bridge at the top of the street , most confusing.
Looking back at the aerial photograph above though, it clearly shows each of the three sections had their own gardens.

Is McMahon's book in the Mitchell HH? Whether it is or isn't, I'd say it's a case of a mistake being compounded between VM and the book. I'd say there is no way that is Pollok St in the photo. I reckon someone has got confused by the similar types of tenement with the portico-style entrances. I'd assume these are Alexander Thomson's.

I cannot believe a residential street like Pollok St would've had traffic lights in those days. The volume of traffic wouldn't have justified it. It looks more like a stretch of Argyle St or somewhere like that.

Nah thats definetely not Pollok st, i can confirm there were never traffic lights at any end of Pollock street, my dads shop was there on the corner of Ardgown/Pollok st till the late 60s.

The street in the image looks like somewhere around the Gorbals cross.
