DUNFERMLINEBOY wrote:If the original tram lines still exist under the tarmac in Glasgow then it would probably be a lot cheaper to restore them that the current Edinburgh fiasco where the original lines were lifted! Glasgow especially i feel would enjoy the return of the trams from the city centre out to towns such as Coatbridge, Airdrie etc! Ironically if you look at the position of the new tram lines in Edinburgh Princes Street and compare them with photos from the 1950's the lines are more or less in exactly the same position as they were and work is presently undergoing to renew the power stations in a central reservation AGAIN in more or less exactly the same place as the originals! What a waste of time and money it was ever scrapping them in the first place, the same can be said for the full restoration of the canal between edinburgh and Glasgow and the reopening of a third glasgow-Edinburgh line with the reopening of the section between Bathgate and Airdrie which now allows he trains to travel directly between Edinburgh Waverly and Helensburgh via Glasgow Queen Street Lower Link, and relinks passenger services between coatbridge and Airdie-Edinburgh for the first time in 50 years!!!

Two things; 1. Welcome Dunfermlineboy.
2. Paragraphs make your post easier to read.
3. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition.
4. Lay off the exclamation marks, except when they really denote an exclamation.

Edited to remove an embarrassing splelling mistake!

Oh everyone likes to have an opinion on others post structure and content, but I think parsing lessons might just be taking it too far!

Rabmania - Good on structure. Poor on arithmetic. :)

Huggy - Provider of spare !!!!'s and ????'s should Dunfermline boy require more. Thank you.

Can we please have more love and less handbags.

Now carry on, on-topic please.

//edited to add, and while we are at it, more good humour would be nice to see too (from all)! Even critical posts aren't always delivered in anger. Cheers.

Argyle Street (mid to late 1950s) by neilmc_photos, on Flickr

A big problem with the old rangefinder cameras was that the scene through the viewfinder never quite lined up with what was being recorded behind the lens: as a result the lady with the blue coat has been partly chopped off in this slide, and there is too much foreground; but at least that means we get a good close-up of the cobbles.

Vinegar Tom wrote:LP - I might have seen what you are talking about. A few years back they were excavating for a new gas main at Eglinton Toll. There was a layer of stout timbers forming a surface under the current road make up. I was appalled at the way they just blootered their way through this stuff with the pecker ( that's what it is called apparently :o ) of the JCB.

I asked around a few folk at the time who had dug a fair number of Glasgow streets , the consensus was that they had not encountered anything like it.

The timbers seemed very well preserved , assuming they are old , anaerobic conditions would have preserved them.

Well well:
"In 1922 Dundee Town Council put out to tender a contract to re-lay Reform Street with Creosoted wooden paving blocks.
In March 1923, Melville Dunn & Company won the contract.
This photograph shows the wooden paving blocks being laid in Reform Street later that year.
Some 200,000 paving blocks were used."
