I'm totally impressed by the sort of things they organised back in the day, it must have been a pretty good tourist attracter for the city. I would love to have gone! ;)

Gaelic was (and still is) a predominately spoken language and very infrequently written (very few native Gaelic speakers could read or write in their native language at that time as it was not taught in schools, and its use discouraged).

The language's spellings were modernised and simplified fairly recently so the spelling in the brochure would be an old spelling.

Was just curious as my name is Eilidh and while there are many Anglicised variations of it out there I hadn't seen ceilidh like that before (apart from people not being able to say it or spell it anyway!).

The transport arrangements are brilliant.

One minute frequency for the trams and 3 minutes for the underground. Not to mention mainline routes, carparks for 10000 cars (were there that many cars in Glasgow in 1938?) and connections from all over the UK.

Don't think we'll ever see anything on that scale again, although the garden festival came close. After the fiasco that was the Millenium Dome the politicians will think twice before promoting another large scale exhibition.

Do you really think the Garden Festival came anywhere
near close to the Empire Exhibition? Not that i was kicking
around in 1938.

The Empire Exhibition apparently cost more than 10,000,000 quid 8O
in 1938 an astounding amount of cash for that time.

What would that be in today's money or 1988's for that matter?

As a matter of interest does anyone know how much
the Garden Festival cost?

Does anyone have a time machine so I can go back to 1988 and actually remember the Garden Festival? And while I'm at it I'll nip back to 1938!

Does anyone have any relatives who would be old enough to remember it at all? Unfortunately I don't but it'd be nice to get someone's opinion on it from the time.

The Garden Festival was big, the site was of a comparable size (if not bigger than Bellahouston Park). Not sure on the cost but there would presumably have been more commercial sponsorship at the Garden Festival so private companies would have footed a larger proportion of the bill.

It would be interesting to compare visitor numbers for both though.

Hehe :D

That's about right my recollections were a couple of plants some steel frames and a couple of canopies. Better not forget all the garish painted silhouette structures that were "models" of Glasgow landmarks.

Am i right in recalling that the Fireworks display at closing night event went pear shaped. Anyone else recall that?

I'm FAR too young to remember the fireworks hehe I was only there once on a school trip. All I remember is a giant plastic swiss cheese wedge for some reason.

Anywho... Mod cap on: the garden festival has its own topic so reminiscing can be done there, general discussion and comparison with the Empire Exhibition here is ok.

The road running east/west along the bottom edge of the park in the pic is Mosspark Boulevard

The pavillion top left of the exhibition in both pics is now the site of Bellahouston Sports Centre

The Tate Tower was situated at the top of the hill which is on the Paisly Rd West side of the park (I suppose), Helen St heads off south to Govan down past what appears to be a stadium (on the right)

Yeah, one of the pyro techs lost a leg and some spectators were injured when one of the big mortars exploded at ground level instead of a couple of hundred feet up
