Brooks Bar (recently Mitchells; dunno what now) was on North Street in those days.

I don't recall another pub on the St Vincent St side of that block, although there might have been one on the corner of Cleveland Street. Just before the corner was a great wee cafe called the MariJaq, after the owner's two daughters, Marissa and Jacqueline.

It became Repertoire and failed but seems to be succeeding as hip pre club club Ivy

Had you lived around here in those days you might well have been glad to see the back of them.

I'm talking about architectural and streetscape value, not individual houses and flats Onny. You simply cannot compare what we have now to what we had then. Anyway some of the most run down tenements in the city have since been rehabilitated and form the core of our best housing stock... as well you knowwww...

I do indeed but the fact remains people, real people, had to live in these tenements in the days before Housing Associations.

If you think today's private landlords are bad, you should have seen them 30-40 years ago.

It still does. I would close the Motorway under pass through Charing Cross and flood it to create a Canal in front of The Mitchell Library.

I love this pic. 1 because it shows how much things changed and 2 because thats the same car as mine crossing the junction in the foreground
