And I was BORN in Springburn......

I was born and spent my first year in Springburn hence the wander about with the mother. :) Was waiting to see how long it took to raise a "whit!!"

Ninatoo - i think the street is still part of Springburn Way, where Springburn Cross used to be (i think).

Was smoking banned in 1939? That looks a more romantic spot for a bit of smirking, out on the veranda or is it a balcony?

"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Although classic car buffs may correct me on this, the car in the old picture is I think a Standard Vanguard made around 1958 which would date the picture to between that year and 1962 which is of course when the trams finally ran.

Nice comparison viceroy :)

Great photos.
Springburn Depot in the background. The first GCT electric trams ran from here, it had it's own mini power station next door.

Thanks Kitten. It is probably the one my mother worked in during the fifties. I will ask her.

Veranda(h). We use it over here all the time. Probably came from Scotland though...hehe!

That's the corner of Leckie Street, known at that time as Colledge Street (correct spelling), and the site is now part of 39 Rossendale Court.

Isn't that St Patrick's Church in Anderston, unfortunately now well-known for darker reasons than religion?

If it is, then the M8 and North St now run pretty much past the front doors and the road at the bottom right is St VIncent St.

Stobcross/Finnieston Crane in the background.

The photographer seems in what was the former Strathclyde Regional Council buildings, or thereabouts, depending on what year this was taken.

Brilliant photos Mori, but that last one is an absolute gem :)
Just peeking out at far left is North Street tram depot which can trace it's origins back to the 1850's and Andrew Menzies (although the building in that view was built in the 1880's).

St Pat's (pre Fr Gerry) with the William Street Clinic just to the north.

I doubt if it's from SRC HQ. My guess would be the top of the old Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital.

I think the photo in question was taken from the roof of the SRC building; if you look at the extreme bottom-right edge of the photo you can see the rounded ledge on the 1st floor of said building.

Here's a couple of photos I took in 1971 from North Street, looking back towards the SRC building, with Clive House, Pegasus House, and that office block at Charing Cross Station also shown, as well as an Atlantean bus and Morris Minor police panda van : sorry about the quality; they are from a couple of 110 format (Kodak Instamatic) negs:-
