They were up working on it at the start of the year as the hooks (dont know if they have a special name) were lying in the carpark for a while then they were placed on cradles under main body of the crane;

By the way they have chopped through the cables it wont be lifting anything soon.

Thanks for the brilliant timeshift Tobester!
The jib has been moved at least once since then: 1990, to suspend George Wylie's 'Straw Locomotive' (pity it didn't fall on top of his 'Big Paper Boat' :wink: ).

I've been looking through the last 160 odd pages of this (and part 1) thread. It's disgusting the demolition of beautiful old buildings and areas to make way for some horrible office block or shopping centre, but I'm amazed at the amount of demolition just to make way for - well nothing much at all. I left Glasgow about 15 years ago and since then have only really been home to visit relatives and haven't seen much of the city. Some of the 'present' photos have almost brought a tear to my eye. I hardly recognise some areas any more and it brought back loads of memories. A huge thank you and 'well done' to all of you for your pictures.

Very true - Glasgow is fast becoming just like every other modern city in the world. Modern architecture makes me so frustrated.

The hook is indeed called a hook, the apparatus which joins hook to lifting hawser is called the 'hook coupler'.

I'm not a 'clever dick' .. I've just worked in the maintenance department of Fairfields. :oops: ::):

Thankfully not changed too much considering. The fire engines were cooler ('scuse the pun) back then but the flag on the pole is much nicer in 2007!
