Hidden Glasgow Revamp

Postby Sharon » Fri Apr 16, 2004 9:16 am

Ok, I'm toying with the idea of spendng a bit of time on a HG revamp.

So, any suggestions would be welcomed.

Plans currently include:

* Adding all the projects to a database so folks can filter them accoring to selected criteria. With maybe just 8 shown on the home page at a time?

* A site search.

* Totally standardise the projects.

* other behind the scenes stuff, better coding etc...

What sections...other than projects, should be included in the site?

Probaly should make the forums over 18's only...they just don't suit kids being there....

Initially i really just didnt think that kids would be interested in posting, but as the site grows i guess there were bound to be a couple.

It would be better if there were none really. Its just not a place for them to be!!!

A chatroom would alleviate some of the pressure on the forums... maybe even a seperate one for the inner sanctum?

Also, a big tick beside:
* Adding all the projects to a database so folks can filter them accoring to selected criteria. With maybe just 8 shown on the home page at a time?

and

* A site search.

I also think giving me moderator status would improve the site no end :wink: ::):

Can you do it in Dobly? :D :wink:

Search facility would be nice.

Not sure about a chat room, I do little enough work during the day as it is. Might be fun in the evenings.

A "Members only" section. Not sure what for, but I like being part of an elite. That's why I run a mailing list with four members..... ::):

CHAT

Postby cataclyzm » Fri Apr 16, 2004 3:20 pm

People don't seem to reply to one anothers' postings in the forums. Some kind of good chat engine would be good, or on second thoughts; would it?

It would certainly accelerate the life of the site and probably generate more ideas and meetings. But we all might discover that none of us actually have anything in common. :?

The hassle with chat is that it depends upon others being there at the same time. It's easier for me to dip in regularly and catchup with what's been going on. With chat I'd probably miss tons.

Also, I suppose there will be more than a few getting access via their work, and may not be able to access chat via their work access.

So, FWIW, a vote against chat and one in favour of forums!

HG

Postby skintobalinto » Fri Apr 16, 2004 8:45 pm

Being one of the newer members I think it is a great site as it is at the moment and is a credit to all those involved, but you can't stand still.

Over 18's I think is a good idea as is chat rooms, but as JayKay said some do access HG at work (don't tell the boss) I would probably do even less work.

"18 or over" should be the default age for accessing the entire internet.

Well Sharon, I think at the moment a chat room could dilute the shenanigans that do go on in the forums.
The topics that are posted do go off, subject quite a lot.
On any other forum or group this could p*ss members off. I don’t mind myself
I must admit I do like the way the topics morph in to other areas .
It is a very organic site.

I like the Ideas about a project database.

Site search by keyword.

General tweaking.

Members only area.

The other place.

Can I get a stripe or something that flashes for work in the field :wink: ?
