Pollok Civic Realm Officially Opened



The new £6.7 million Pollok Civic Realm, designed by Archial Architects, will today be opened by Nicola Sturgeon, MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing.

Built between the newly expanded Pollok Health Centre and the Pollok Leisure Centre, Pollok Civic Realm is a unique facility providing one stop access to a range of complementary public services delivered by partners in the public and voluntary sectors. Forming part of the overall Pollok Town Centre regeneration, it houses a café, library, museum, child-care facilities and other specialist social and healthcare related services.

....Just a few lines of clarification..
The overall Civic Realm proposals, and Local Community Resource, were amongst other forgotten plans to be shelved when this 'new build' was being designed.
There was a desparate need to have a central information point where local information including councillor's surgeries, local group timetables and even local jumble sales, would be available for callers....
Additional to that would be 'certain Council activities' to form a 'central bank of resources' available to the local community and further...
The entire area has NO NOTICE BOARDS, or any INFORMATION POINTS, to let the general public know what is going on in their areas.
You will see from the photo, that a large INFO image is on the floor of the reception...this is NOT for Information as such, as no one mans the desk, and only people asking at either the Library or Leisure/Recreation sections will be helped.
Notices stuck on pillers with sellotape are from Council sources, and are duplicated within their own areas, but local notices CANNOT BE PLACED THERE......COUNCIL POLICY..!
Similarily, there is no community information area even within the newly designed "public" library
The local KIST or Community Museum was not even open some 30 minutes after it should have been when I visited, and contains NOTHING of local interest, and only displays static materials found anywhere in library spaces, and NO information leaflets containing any local or even Pollok-wide information.
Yes...its a nice building where some departments can hide staff and seem to be offering a local service....but again, not the building we, as local people were promised....so, I call it WEDGE 2, and so far, it looks as if it is heading to be yet another 'pink elephant' within our community..
So, if you decide to visit, please remember what the 'original purpose' of this building was supposed to be....never intended to be a 'hidey-hole' for certain departments to set up shop.

Another 'Nugget' of useful information was printed today (15th June), in the Evening Times.
Silverburn is about to submit another new set of proposals for the extension to the shopping areas, now if you can recall some of the previous comments.....there is basically only 2 main options...
An extension to the northern car park, which will encroach on the land recently vacated by the closure of Burnbare Primary School.
Or an intervention into the areas at the rear of the NSB at Cowglen, with accesses from the old bus stances that fed the Savings bank.
Either way, but in particular option 1 at Burnbrae, we will no doubt be preparing to see a big-money dog fight over the land......wonder if the local community might get a say this time....?

Think you may find that the development refers to the area where Farmfood is currently.

I don't think that very many people are going to visit the Civic Realm to look at wee jumble sale notices and the like. There are loads of other places people get that kind of info from like the local GHA offices and in the Housing Associations offices and newsletters and in whatever the Pollok Post is called these days. The Civic Realm is great and provides a magnificent service and I for one really appreciate it. Whenever I go in all the public computers are taken and loads of people are learning and reading...magnificent.

unfortunately, there is NO provision for advertising local events, excepting the local newsagent, however, the point was that contrary to what is being published officially, there is no source where local general information can be seen, for interest.
local housing offices frown on any information being put on 'their noticeboards' that does not advertise their services, and with the location of these offices being so off the main routes, that facility is worthless.
The main point is that the Civic Realm was never intended to be a showpiece for certain departments to hide, nor was it supposed to be a Council satellite, it badly needed to be a point of reference for the local community, instead of being a 'walk-through' space.
Currently if Tesco removed their noticeboard, there would be little information available for reference.
Remember this.....information is power to whomever holds it, and if this cannot be distributed around the area for all to be kept updated, then the small group of people currently in possession of most of the local information, will remain figures of self-inflated importance.
Regarding the demise of the Pollok Post...we now see articles from all over the Southside appearing, most of which can be read elsewhere....a Pollok reference point does not exist, so we continually troll the shops to see what is on and where....
Why local communities do not produce their own newsheets for their own people baffles me, and allows the severest of censorships to exist on what we are told, and what we are not.
