Hi, found this site quite by accident while researching something else. I lived with my family in Glentyan Drive, from 1951 till 1959. We lived at the top of the hill, I think the power station was next door; across the road was a small wood and further down a sort of rough sloping field, which quickly became Gowanbank School. The wood pretty much remained intact, and I broke my ankle falling off the pailings which separated it from the school. If you were a pupil at Levern, you had to do a year at Gowanbank - primary 5 or 6 I think, because presumably Levern was too small to accommodate all of the recent arrivals to the area (and this was before building had begun on South Nitshill). Our back green was enclosed on two sides by an old stone wall. Over the wall was the priest's house (we used to steal the apples, and I was caught by the gardener!), then the doctor's house (Dr Watsmann?)and another house, then a large house which we called Ricky's house (Ithink Ricky may have been a dog who lived there). This house had a large garden to the rear, and we climbed on the wall to pick their red-currants. No-one seemed to know anything about the people who lived in this house; they were never seen in the garden and consquently became the subject of much conjecture (amongst the children) about what mystery they were hiding. We went picnics (bread and jam and a bottle of water) to the ruined Darnley Castle, and what we called the Bluebell Woods on the left of Nitshill Road, going towards the Hurlet . And I don't think anyone's mentioned the Socialist Sunday School (which I think actually met on Saturday) on Nitshill Road. Enough for now. Great site, thanks.

Welcome, leverngirl. The priest's house, doctor's house etc. are collectively known as Househill Cottages, and are still there, unlike the Craigbank tenements in Glentyan and Glenlora Drives, as well as Newfield Square and the tenements that backed on to it. The power station you speak of supplied the central heating to those tenements, and I can still remember the big old AEC tipper lorry struggling up Glentyan Drive with 15 tons of coal on the back for the power station.

The Craigbank flats were way ahead of the other post-war tenements with their central heating, and you had to be well quoted to get one; several teachers from Gowanbank primary, where I was a pupil, stayed there. I remember when the South Nitshill scheme was first built, the kids from there were bussed to Gowanbank and other schools in the area until their own school was ready.

If you're a member of the SCRAN website, there's a photo of the Nitshill Socialist Sunday School on the site, about to set off on an outing, sometime around 1960. Unfortunately I can't reproduce the photo here because of SCRAN's strict copyright policy.

  Been trying to get a good image of the war memorial at Nitshill Railway Station for a friend, but can't find a good one....tried to get digital view, but the weeds, rubbish and vandalism had all but hidden it from view.
Wondering if the site is only tendered 2/3 days before Rememberence Sunday, shocking lack of regular cleaning, perhaps Councillor should add to his photobucket, and keep area checked for cleanliness.....?
If cannot get view for my elderly friend, then may have to wait until November to get photo of site to send to her.....!

Fourbytwo

I have already made a request to have the memorial cleaned and the area tyded up. This area is maintained as part of the regular maintenance carried out throughout the whole area. I travel by train as you know and therefore pass this almost every day. During the growing season this area has been regularly maintained. However this year there has been a particular problem with the rate of growth of both grass and shrubs.

Hopefully you should see that the area has again been tyded up.

If you want a photo I have a couple and I am sure there is one on this site in the War Memorials thread.

For Darnleygirl

Sorry the photos I have are not as old as you may like but I will see if I can get some more and post them up for you.
