I have to admit to being more interested in the bannisters than the tiles so I dont know if this is the right thread for these pics.
I did think about starting another thread for stairwells but I didnt want moderated;

As a postie I can ligitimately get into a lot of closes. If I remember my camera at work one day I will get lots more.

Nice one! Wheres this, Shawlands?

If theres any more interesting/unusual closes posted (as opposed to wally closes) we can split this off into a new thread.

This one is in Cathcart. I deliver to this close so I walk up and down it nearly every morning.
Like I said, I was thinking about starting a thread for stair wells as these can be pretty interesting. Maybe they would fit a thread like that better?

Does anyone know where in Glasgow to get traditional tiles like these cream coloured ones?

Some of the fireplace retailers crusty, sometimes they have them in their back workshop... no harm in asking.

a few of them strip out old tenment fireplaces and have tiles for sale, in fact there are a few in seaward st beside paisley rd west.

Hello there,
First post on this board :) . I'm working on a dissertation about tenement tiles in Shawlands and Langside. Unforutunately, there's not a whole lot of "academic" literature about tiles, most of it is collector literature, focusing more on the monetary value rather than the cultural importance or their uniqueness. It's been great seeing some of these pictures, and I even recognize a couple of these closes (especially the ginko-leaf dado and candelabra work one from Yorkhill!).

As to how to locate replacement tiles, you'd do well to try Craven & Dunhill Tile Manufacturers in Jackfield, in the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire. They make reproduction tiles of their original designs. The vast majority of these tiles came from England, with the exception of J. Campbell of Glasgow, and most of his stuff is in Dumbarton, with a few examples in Pollokshields (the few examples that do remain are absolutely stunning though!). The major English manufacturers were Minton (more for encaustic tile floors rather than the wall tiles, but they did produce some), Craven & Dunhill and Maw & Co. The problem is that the glazes aren't necessarily uniform between batches, much the same as with fabric dye lots, so even if you get one that's the "right" colour of Victorian White, it could be slightly off.

In conclusion...if anyone knows of tiles being removed or otherwise destroyed (replaced, painted over, whatever), could you please e-mail me through my account so that I can document them before they're lost? I'd really appreciate it. If you've got any additional information or questions for me about tiles, please, share!

Fireplace/close tiles

Postby Bingo Bango » Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:44 am

alright folks?

I am getting my south side flat done up at the minute (when i say at the minute i have been at it for 13 months now....)

Long story short, the once covered up chimney in the bedroom has been reinstated, i have had the plasterer in and sheeted it all out and its back to looking quite good in its raw state. The hearth tiles, rectangular green, were too damaged to save. They were only on the ground and were cracked and chipped badly with scrapes deep into the glaze so they were chipped in the bin sadly.

I came across this http://www.vicfires.com/32_fireplace_tiles/05_glazed_tiles.html website and have received some samples of fireplace tiles in 2 different greens and an ivory as the close is the same scheme. What i am looking for is photo examples or drawings showing typical tile patterns for closes/hearths/floors in general etc. I have a few layouts done for what i would like to see with ivory and green but would be good to get genuine examples. Have looked on flickr which has been fairly useful.

If anybody knows anything i would appreciate it alot!
