I couldn't see anywhere better to put this and I apologise for the dreadful quality of the pic but it's a little piece of Glaswegiana I found at the back of a drawer in my desk.

It reads

STAKIS CHAVALIER CASINO
95 HOPE ST. GLASGOW 0141-226 3856

Anyone got any images of the Midas that i think used to be at the corner St vincent st and Hope st ? , later became Carnegies underground.

An old haunt of mine during the 80s. 8)

This used to be a great pub with a tremendous atmosphere. Then some years ago it got taken over and renamed Oscar Slater's. It went rapidly downhill after that with a diminishing clientele and even though the old name was eventually brought back the pub never really recovered.

it was run down before it became Oscar Slater's. It's a lease pub and only the landlord makes money not the lessee.

Mr Bint is convinced that this was a Greene King pub before it closed, and is now a Caledonian Breweries. It's only been closed a month or so, and I can't for the life of me remember seeing them doing anything specific to it (I can see it from my living room window).

Is he imagining things?

Painted and papered and they took out one of the snugs. The one directly at the St Georges road entrance.

At the risk of displaying a total lack of knowledge about how these matters work, isn't the sign a suggestion that it's a Belhaven pub?

Greene King own Bellhaven but they kept the Bellhaven Pub brand. The Carnarvon is not currently listed as a Bellhaven pub on their web site.

Ah kent whit ah meant  ::): May have been the pints of ale I'd consumed when I wrote that which confuddled my brain.

Ah, the mists are clearing. I think what it was, was that the "Lease available" sign had Greene King named on it. Mr Bint was all for encouraging me to take on the lease as I'm partial to a pint of IPA or seven given half the chance - especially since we lived in Suffolk before landing back in Glasgow.

Oh well, at least it's open again. Meanwhile, The Halt on Woodlands Road is threatened with "gentrification" - ie another West End Gastropub. http://www.facebook.com/groups/483408108339825

Speaking as someone who lived upstairs from the Halt in the days when it appeared to be staffed almost entirely by female members of the Howie family, I've always thought that the last renovation was a bit soulless.
