I used to meet my brother most fridays in the mally. He worked in the the bedford bingo. what a dump. They used to have a guy singing and they paid him in guiness, he would get more steamin as the night went on. Hilarious. never saw an ounce of trouble in it.
they used to advertise in the ET.. "come for for a swally in the mally"

Aye, the Mally for a swally. Anyone remember that there was a stuffed crocodile hanging from the ceiling. And the trapdoor to the cellar was in front of the bar. One false move and bang down you went

My boss took these photos in the late 70s and early 80s when he came to live in Glasgow. He was fascinated by the sight of these pubs left standing alone after the demolition of the buildings around them.

Cumbo,
Here's a few more for you. Glad you like them. I know the Maryhill pubs well enough but can anyone add detail about the others?

I do like the way you could name a pub "the new camp bar" in the olden days without so much as a snigger.

My dad drank there - in fact , he drank everywhere - we lived across the road in Oakbank Terrace. It had been the Camp Bar in Camperdown St. Alan Rough bought it in the 70s and I think it may have changed name then before becoming the New Camp Bar. There was a police station at the foot of the street.
There was also a Camp Bar in Renrew St.

Fascinating set of photographs. I have always loved the images of old pubs standing on their own.

Seamey wrote:Ultratheque - where Waterstone's is now on Sauchiehall Street, was open in the early 80s and was full of mirrors. Think I first went in when I was 16. Langside College had their college discos in there too. Funny I remember getting a student card with my age just that wee bit older so I wouldn't get asked any questions by the bouncers - but then I never got asked for ID again.
There was a bar at the corner of the North British Hotel (Copthorne?) that I think was called Grand Prix and was great cause it was one of the first places to sell Furstenburg - I went in a few years later and it became Wenches. Wenches I think still sold Furstenburg, but I might have been distracted a little.

AAH Ultratheque........loved it....was feeling old a few weeks ago having a coffee in what was the dance floor with my 13 year old daughter. Used to go to the Centre Court and Zaks before it. Had a great 21st party in the Saints and Sinners. Me and friends now try to remember the 'real' names of pubs (what they were called in the 80's) when we are 'lady lunching' in town now!!
Cheers all
